Should the state start with cuts with the prison guards who protect us from the prisoners or perhaps the nurses who are working short so that we can take care of all the sick people? Think about it before you decide.
I'd like to get the former mayor back in office. At least you knew what he was doing step by step.
Both Auburn and Syracuse have unscrupulous lawyers with the same motto: you're presumed innocent until you're broke.
Isn't it strange that the ambulance service wants to move into the Frederick Street fire house because the response time will be quicker? Supposedly the fire department moved out to save money and the response time would be the same.

I did not write "puppy mad - eat it alive" -- though I imagine if that's how you read it, it must have sounded pretty funny -- the post was actually not meant to be humorous at all.

Meanwhile, I hear McCain also offered up his wife to compete in a topless contest, the "Buffalo Chip" biker beauty contest -- about which I know nothing, but I don't think I'd want to win a "Large Mammal Poop" contest myself. Apparently, once again, McCain opened his mouth without really knowing what he was talking about. "

I know, you're all pretty glad I am not dictator of the world. ;-)
I did see BOTH Paris Hilton ads -- the one McCain's people put out, AND her response "ad" (on her website, I think -- I saw it on CNN) -- her response was pretty savvy. Paris in a skimpy bathing suit in a lounger by a pool doing a parody of herself as totally airheaded, but saying that she thanks John McCain for his endorsement of her, which must mean she is running for President herself. She then lays out Obama's and McCain's energy plans in simple one-liners, then puts forward her own compromise plan, which isn't half bad or stupid at all -- the reverts back to her airhead routine to say she has to go look for a VP now. It was a classy comeback to his stupid insult -- a lot better than I would have expected from Paris Hilton.
I still say McCain shows a total lack of tact or judgement in allowing that ad at all. It's one thing, and expected, that candidates will take jabs at each other during a campaign, but to put down a celebrity who has nothing to do with it (and whose family WERE supporters) show a lack of sense. Think about Jesse Jackson and his old "Hymie-Town" remark -- it shows the same lack of sense, judgement, tact or diplomacy. You would not want this guy making cracks like that about foreign heads of state, but it seems to think that sort of thing is a funny joke.
Isn't it bad enough our government has p*ssed off a good half of the rest of the world already -- do we really want to make it everyone else? "

I can say I don't have 20 grand laying around to go solar! and I believe most middle to poor class don't either!
The 'drill now fad' is due to citizens not fully aware of 'how it works' demanding our officials to do something
NOW.
Though this seems like the easy way/quick fix to most--whom haven't taken the time to READ up on 'laws, epa delays, permits, red tape, costs, and availability of drills/rigs/refineries.
Also adding the factor 'citizens' cannot afford solar or wind, the average person yells DRILL.
I have searched thru many sites, the 2 I posted seem to be a good source of info.
Many areas leased have proved to be duds, yet in order to check deeper, back to red tape.
Areas that have oil, still have years to produce either EPA, or equipment hold-ups.
NO MATTER what good is the majority of it--if it will be sold on the open market?
Overall I think most people put too much faith in their government, thinking they/someone is not only to blame but they will fix it all overnight!
NOT!!
these issues today were discussed with no solutions back in the 70's.
And if we all don't put pressure on our officials/or get them out of office ASAP these issues will be 100 times worse in 30 years to come!
DRILL is not the only answer, however PRODUCE and keep in the USA, aid middle and low class funds to switch to cheaper sources, make our officials accountable for their INACTIONS! "

How's that kind of lack of judgement/lack of care going to fly in the international diplomacy arena?
As a Head of State, you must be diplomatic towards other Heads of State and important persons from other countries even if you think they are total twits -- publically making a joke of them is not going to do wonders for foreign relations.
Chris could use a lot less gasoline right now if he weren't driving a Blazer. What's the average number of passengers per trip in that vehicle? I see so many SUVs, minivans and trucks out on the road ferrying one person back and forth in a ridiculous waste of fuel every day. I know people who buy big trucks for the boost it gives their little egos who then commute 25+ miles each way daily -- just one small guy in a gas-guzzling hog of a truck -- the guy I have in mind ought to be slapped a few times.
cm: About Hess' response: It's a pretty quick response from the corporate level. It's a good sign that they give you an acknowledgement and an idea of where your complaint is in their handling process. Now we wait to see if/when/how the more local people handle it. I am still holding all the possible further actions in reserve unless they drop the ball.
I still don't like Hillary any better than Obama -- she's just as bad about flip-flopping, she's way too hooked up with the pharmaceutical industry, and she is way, way too tied up with Bill, who is a total loose cannon. "

From the GOP website:
House Republicans will increase the production of American-made energy in an environmentally-safe way. This includes the exploration of next generation oil, natural gas, and coal and the production of advanced alternative fuels like cellulosic and clean coal-to-liquids – all while protecting our natural resources for future generations. House Republicans will also:
• Support actions that reduce America’s dependence on energy from unstable foreign governments and dictatorships by increasing environmentally-safe production of oil and natural gas in areas such as the arctic coastal plain and in deep ocean energy resources; and
• Promote unconventional fuels such as coal-to-liquids technology and recovering our vast oil shale reserves by:
• Increasing access for environmentally responsible development of conventional and unconventional domestic oil and natural gas production;
• Providing coal-to-liquids financing and tax incentives;
• Unlocking two trillion barrels of shale oil on government-owned land in the American West. This access alone would supply Americans gasoline needs and make America totally independent from foreign oil for 200 years.
House Republicans will promote new, clean, and reliable sources of energy like advanced nuclear and next generation coal, while promoting clean power from renewable energy such as wind and hydroelectric power. Nuclear energy has proven itself as a safe, carbon-free and environmentally friendly alternative, with France relying on it for nearly 80 percent of its electricity needs, compared to just 19 percent in America.
House Republicans are committed to cutting red tape and increasing the supply of American-made fuel and energy. Limiting the construction of new oil refineries and bureaucratic regulations mandating the use of exotic fuels have decreased supply and increased the Pelosi Premium.
So, unless I'm going to put a sail on my Blazer or buy a team of mules to pull it, I'm stuck using gasoline for now. Our reliance on oil products
isn't going to change overnight so why not use our own resources instead of relying on the Middle East until we can come up with a viable, cost effective alternative? "

As for gas prices going down, I wouldnt count on it staying that way. The pump prices are based partly on the sale of oil with the delivery within 2 months. APPRX 2 months ago nearing todays date oil sold cheaper. However July 11th was the highest selling price of 147.27-when that days oil arrives the price will go up. In about October we will pay lower due to the barrel prices being around 120.00 right now.

There are soem lawmakers putting forward new legislation to change that, but so far, they've only passed very limted restrictions (only a handful of narrowly defined crimes apply), and it was not retroactive, so any convicted Congressional felons, including one person who was convicted of manslaughter, can keep right on collecting his/her pension from us.

The "Offshore Drilling" canard is being pushed as if there's some lack of energy, or lack of oil here ie, a "shortage".
There is not, and every knowledgeable person say so.
The fact is, the oil companies don't WANT to bring the prices down, or they would be building more refineries, and more ways to drill the MILLIONS OF ACRES THAT THEY ALREADY OWN AND HAVE LEFT UNTAPPED!
This whole "drill now and the price will come down" is a bogus claim.
Of course, the oil companies and their traders will bring the price down on the mere mention of a proposal, but that's to prod and control the discussion. DOn't be so naive as to buy into it. The only thing drilling offshore will do is suspend or delay the inevitable--the fact that if we want to lower the price of energy, we have to develope alternate form s of it.
Once again, Obama is right on this--he correctly stated that even Big Oil magnate T. Boone Pickens said "This is one crisis we can't drill our way out of".

There must be an OVERFLOW of infrastructure monies due to gas being so high But watch how they abuse that money!
the citizen printed the web sites to 'check on the state finaces'
I bet we could ALL find areas to CUT and it wont be guards or nurses. "

welp my take is cut the guards. Both are tuff jobs that I have respect for but the nurses are educated and not just anyone can walk off the street to fill in. I feel that as the population ages so will the nurse need. Prisoners need to have "rights" removed so that guards can actually do their jobs. I just wish the state did not negotiate such ridiculous pensions and medical bene's during and after retirement for state workers. Pensions are a throwback to another time and should be dropped and workplace 401's s/b implimented. If the state revamped JUST that, the millions saved would be astronomical. I handle Empire thru a private corp and what a 'test job' gets u in gluttony for not much professionalism is bizarre.
and lets NOT go cut/paste happy shall we? "

it wasnt last week but was either of the two weeks prior to last...and weights and measures was mentioned. Perhaps that station hasnt been inspected in a while - so they could be honest and just not know. We get fuel at BJ's and that alone really does take care of the annual membership fee. "

something similar happened to my husband at hess a while back. He was charged for 13.25 gallons of gas when he went to fill up. He had about 1/4 of a tank, and the tank is a 12 gallon one!!! He encountered this at both Hess stations in Auburn and another one in elbridge. He has since stopped going to hess for gas. "

Also, I laughed when I read the end of your post the first time -- I thought you were questioning of leggy women with long red hair were legal! ;-) Have to be more careful with my reading, but it did give me a good chuckle for a moment.
I did see a very different story on gas stations in some other states where they advertise one price, but if you use your debit card, the pump sets to a higher price and if you don't look for it, you won't notice. Some states allow this practice, but they have to post the difference in prices prominently. That one had me shaking my head, as I have seen places in this state where they charge you more if you use cash (and hence can't do the transaction in an automated fashion from the pump).
Side note: There is also concern on how safe it is to use a credit or debit card at a gas station. The pumps gather the password info, then pass it via wireless back to a server in the station, which sends it on to be checked -- and they have caught many stations which don't have that wireless transmission of your credit and debit card info sufficiently secured -- identity thieves with wireless rigs can pick it up and steal it easily. Let's hope they've cracked down on that one.
movedsouth: You know, I am sure there may be a small amount of gas in the hose -- I saved the receipt for my $0.06 transaction and it claimed it was for .02 gallons of gas. I have used pumps where you pull the trigger and there is a delay while the hose primes and before gas starts coming out. But in this case, I had not even pulled the trigger. Nothing was priming, nothing was happening at all and I was being charged. The point here is that I am paying for the amount stuck in the hose not once but twice while only getting it into my car once, and the next customer will be paying for the very same bit of gas stuck in the hose for which I already paid once (the bit stuck in the hose at the end).
Hess has an excellent reputation overall, so I wonder if it is the specific station -- perhaps it is a franchise or something. Still, they were always good up until now, so perhaps it was the clerk, whom I've never seen before. It was just very unexpected to me to have something like this happen at this particular station, so it has me wondering if it were sanctioned by management, or a scam happening somewhere down the chain of command.... (Don't the guys in the movie Office Space get filthy rich due to some computer error that gives them a tiny fraction of a penny on each transaction)?
cm -- yep, airports are pricey. I paid $11 for my one white Irishman which costs me $4.50 at the Utopia Club (and a lot less when I have it at home!) "

funny they would be nearing NY in the time it took me to get home! lol
airports these days are mini-malls only with ahigher mark-up! I had to buy niece a pair of flip-flops, hers broke in the check-in line--a mere 12.99, then 22.00 at Mcds, 4.00 tolls, and 10.00 parking.
the parking was a joke 1.00 per 20 minutes--no one could possibly park and get to the terminal in 20 minutes-atleast NOT at this huge airport!! basically it costs a dollar to just park in a spot!!
HESS: I have never ever seen anything but ZEROS on the pump--I always look too, with the newer pumps I am never sure if I pushed all the buttons right.
I am sure that it cant be legal.
I cant wait to hear what they outcome is! "

This morning I stopped by the Hess station on Grant Ave. I swiped my debit card, unhooked the hose and lifted the handle. Before I had done another thing, before I had squeezed the trigger, before I had dispensed even one drop of gas, the pump registered $0.06
I was miffed. I put the hose back and went into the store. I told the clerk that I had not dispensed any gas but there was $0.06 on the meter. Instead of apologizing and doing something to correct the situation, she informed me I was being charged for a "certain amount" of gas which was in the hose already.
First, I don't buy that. I told her so and left to get my gas elsewhere.
But, just for the sake of argument, let's say it's true. The customer is charged first for the $0.06 worth of gas in the pump, then additionally for every drop of gas pumped up from the tank below -- which includes another $0.06 worth of gas which will be stuck in the pump until the next customer comes along and which is not dispensed into the first customer's car.
That means customer #1 would be charged for $0.06 of gas which s/he never got because it was still stuck in the hose at the end of the transaction. Additionally, the next customer will also pay for that $0.06 worth of gas, so Hess collects twice on it, while the customer goes home short of that for which what s/he paid.
It's a tiny amount of money to each person, but it adds up when you consider the volume of customers in and out of there every day, at every pump.
I came right home and wrote to the Hess Corporation, to give them the opportunity to correct the situation and make an apology to their Auburn customers. In all fairness, they should be given that opportunity to make good.
But I will keep folks here posted on what I hear back, when I hear back, if I hear back. In the meantime, feel free to tell the folks at that station just what you think of them nickel-n-dime cheating their customers when gas prices are already plenty high enough.
If I don't get an acceptable response, I will write to the Better Business Bureau as well as sending a real United States Postal letter to The Citizen to be sure I reach as many people as possible about this dishonest practice.
Has anyone else experienced this at this station or elsewhere? It happened to me once at a Sunoco A Plus station in Ithaca, but when I complained, they tooks steps to make it up to me AND they checked and found the equipment was faulty and they had it fixed. They didn't make like it was just some kind of reasonable and fair policy.
I've been a customer at that Hess station for more years than I can recall, and have always heretofore had very good service. The fella they used to have behind the counter on the early mornings (or afternoons on weekends when I was commuting to football practice in Syracuse some years ago) was always very pleasant and friendly. Hess tends to have one of the best prices on gas, and their restrooms are always clean if you need one.
But this latest is not acceptable -- let's see if they can be moved to rectify the wrong -- not just the measly six cents charged to my debit card for nothing, but to all their customers since this practice was put in place. "

I dont think cities like Auburn who have prisons, want any type of riot or escapes.
crime is way too high and will continue to grow, due to todays economy.
With loss of jobs & homes more middle class will become poor.
Divorce rates will double, and so will domestic violence.
The cities will also be forced to hire more police and build more jails.
Our 535 spent hundreds of hours only to NOT make a decision on one simple fact: to drill or Not to drill.
the 535 are wasting time and money, that could be better invested for the good of all. "

Liberal vision has helped build the country. C.E. Owen, an 80-year-old from Canton, Ga., recently wrote in the Atlanta Constitution, "All of us should thank God every day for the stout-hearted liberals of the 1930s and 1940s. The liberals brought electric lights and indoor plumbing to our farm homes." They also brought the Civil Rights Act and Social Security, women's right to vote, bank-deposit insurance, and the Peace Corps. The list goes on and on.

getting the 2 packed up for their flight home tomorrow-neither have ever flown--I hope they dont throw up!
I am not looking forward to 'traffic city' which I have to pass to get to the international airport-on a weekend this could be an hour backup!
the last time I was there, I locked the keys in the car with it still running! Plus it was my in-laws car and they were on vacation in NY..You have no idea how long it takes AAA when its someone else car, and they are out of state!!
I told them to just call the police, it would be faster!
I honestly didnt steal the car, and calling 20 numbers was because they were hard to track down--this was well before cell phones became 'the fad'
lol... "
