Tommy Herbert blasted a one out home run in the sixth inning to propel the Auburn 10 and 11-year old Little League All-star team to a huge win over Levitown on Sunday.
The win in the New York Sectional tournament final four, being played in the Bronx, was a huge one after Auburn fell to Colonie 2-0 in a classic pitcher's duel on Saturday.
Auburn now advances to play the winner of Colonie and Cortlandt, at 5:30 p.m. today in the Bronx.
On Sunday, Kevin DiCola lasted four innings on the mound, giving up seven hits and three runs. Hunter Charles earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings and behind him, the defense was perfect. Levitown, out of Long Island, held a three run lead after three innings, but Auburn battled back. Jack Burgmaster crushed a two run single to close the gap in the bottom of the fifth and Trent Ward tied the game on a fielder's choice RBI.
The big win came on the heels of a heartbreaking loss on Saturday, in which Mike Charles tossed a masterful complete game, with seven strikeouts. Colonie out-hit Auburn 2 to 1, with both hits coming from Nick Donato. Ben Contento earned the win on the mound.
“What our kids have accomplished is amazing - I'm so proud of them,” Auburn coach Mike Charles said. “Down here, these teams don't know anything about Auburn. We're playing against District 22 teams, where they have 400 kids in the league, where as we have about 100. This is unbelievable.”
