Government must enforce leash law

Saturday, August 2, 2008 11:35 PM EDT

Over the course of the past two years I have resided in Auburn and have had several encounters with unleashed animals while walking my leased dog. The majority of the dogs that have attacked my dog have been pitt bulls, also known as, bull terriers.
In the past week I have had two encounters with two different pitt bulls and, three of my neighbors have had encountered one of these same dogs.

There have been two calls to the dog warden without response.

As a responsible dog owner, I walk my pet on a lease in my neighborhood, but have become very nervous and wary about even going out now due to this whole situation.

My pet is controlled at all times and, I want nothing more than others to take full responsibility for their pets for the sake of neighborhood or visitors who come here. But, when they do not I truly expect the city to take action when we make a complaint for our safety and our visitors who come to visit.

When no one from your department responds to these type of calls, what is going to happen when someone is seriously injured or scarred for the rest of their life, physically and emotionally?

What do you recommend that we do when you will not answer your phone?

Someone must be held accountable beside the owner when our calls are not returned.

Please let us know what we can do or where we can turn for help.

" Cheeko, you don't have a clue about what you are talking about. Maybe you should shut off Maury and "When Animals Attack". I have Rottweilers that are great with kids, cats, pretty much everyone. My tenents have a pit bull and a 4 year old boy and their dog is gentle and quiet.
Irresponsible owners create mean dogs. I was attacked and bitten by an Old English Sheepdog when I was a kid. The dog's owner was terrible to that animal and when it broke its lead, I got bit.
Should we outlaw Sheepdogs?
How many dogs do you own Cheeko? "

" I too have called the dog warden with NO response at all. They pass these new barking laws, nobody can be bothered to enforce them, yet they could make money for the city if the dog warden would get off his butt and do his job! "

" One step futher---because pit bulls are not a good family dog (they have the tendercy to turn on a dime)--- Pit Bulls really DO NOT BELONG IN A FAMILY SETTING. Neighbors, other dogs, are not really safe, therefore this breed of dog should be limited in city type settings. THIS IS MY MAIN POINT THAT FAMILIES SHOULD CHOSE ANOTHER BREED OF DOG FOR CITY LIFE. " Cheeko, get real. It's the owner's ignorance that make these dogs act like they do in our society. Just look at the ASCPA website, 90% of the dogs there for adoption are pit bulls or pit bull mixes. Stupid people make mean dogs. People need to take more responsibility for their dogs. I am an avid dog lover and owner and do not blame the dog. It is the owner who is to blame. "

" Get a license to carry a weapon and shoot the attacking dogs. It is legal to shoot an attacking dog if you have proper gun licenses. "

" The only law we need on the local books is PIT BULLS MUST BE KEPT BEHIND SIX FOOT HIGH LOCK FENSES. Pit bulls are not family dogs---they are protectors and mean and should be stop from breeding. I know that this is a hard line on the issue, but right decisions MUST be the only decision. "

" I've experienced the same in terms of calling the dog warden -- he just never comes out to deal with situations. I don't know why the guy gets paid, as I have yet to hear of him actually doing anything. "
