Augustine closed out the season with one of his finest performances.

Under the lights at Falcon Park, the Skaneateles pitcher tossed a two-hitter, shutting out Hannibal 11-0 in the Cayuga County Babe Ruth championship game Thursday night.

Augustine also belted two doubles at the plate.

“He was really in control out there the whole way,” Skaneateles head coach Tim Mulcahy said. “He has a tough pitch, it's like a submarine-type of pitch that rises. Not too many 13- to 15-year-olds have seen that kind of pitch and I think that gave us an edge.”

“I felt really good out there,” Augustine said. “I had a great defense behind me. It felt great to be able to hold them down and it was cool being out there with the lights on the mound. I felt like I was in a big league game.”

Also leading the Lakers' offense was catcher Jared Mulcahy who recorded two triples and Pat Roberts who came through with some pivotal clutch hitting.

“The whole team hit the ball the whole way,” Tim Mulcahy said. “Through the year we have been working on discipline and hitting and as the season wore on we became a stronger hitting team. This game really showed that, we hit some deep fly balls.” Coach Mulcahy's trick has been to get the guys to concentrate on only swinging at the good pitches and then hitting them as hard as they can.

That is exactly how they played the title game as they took an early lead with one run scored in the first and then a big rally in the third adding five more runs.

“We knew we had to get into them early,” coach Mulcahy said. “They beat us once this year, they were the only team who beat us this year and we knew we had to play hard.”

Early in the season the Lakers fell to the Warriors 6-3 but never lost again.

“Hannibal is a young team,” Skaneateles assistant coach Joe Augustine said. “They played very well, their coach did well teaching them the fundamentals of the sport.”

“The Babe Ruth League has a great history in Hannibal,” league president Bill Miller said. “For many years they had a dynasty that would win every championship. Both of these teams did a great job this year.”

This was Skaneateles' third straight appearance in the Babe Ruth championship game and its second win.

“I was really excited to get out there and play,” Jared Mulcahy said. “I really wanted to win, this is my last season playing Babe Ruth and it was nice to go out with a bang. I am glad to get it over with though.”

Jared Mulcahy had a strong defensive game behind the plate while Ryan Coye also played well at second base.

“This was probably the best game I have ever had,” Jared Mulcahy said. “We had to make them think they couldn't be in the game at all. This was a great field to play on too, it is really smooth.”

“We really had to try and not let them get hits and score,” Zach Augustine added. “We got the score up early and kept them from getting on base.”
