Our view: City parking rules need to be clarified

Auburn's parking law is a good idea, but it won't be effective without more clarification and public education.
Alternate side parking was formerly in place during only the winter months, to allow snowplows to clear city streets right up to the curbs.

But having it in place year-round makes sense. On many streets, it's impossible for two cars to pass in opposite directions when cars are parked on both sides, and one motorist has to pull to the side to make room for the other - not the safest way for traffic to flow.

And clogged roadways can also make it difficult for emergency vehicles to quickly reach homes where people need help.

The new year-round rule regulation became effective in June, but city officials decided to give people time to get used to the idea before it began ticketing cars. But it failed during that time period to educate the public.

As written, the law is inherently confusing because the daily change begins at 6 p.m., so the 24-hour parking limit includes parts of both odd and even days.

It turns out that at 6 p.m. on even days, drivers should begin parking on the even-numbered side of the street. That means that for 18 hours of the 24-hour period (from midnight to 6 p.m. the following day) vehicles are actually parked on the even side of the street on odd-numbered days - and vice versa.

Confused? So are city officials, some of whom gave completely opposite interpretations of the odd/even hours when asked this week about enforcement.

We suggest the city leave warning notes on vehicles of first-time violators, explaining the rules and giving a phone number that people can call with questions.

Having the law in place won't do any good if people aren't able to follow it because they don't understand it.

" I firmly believe that driveways is the only place to park your vehicles. No driveway---build one, it is your land. Roads were made for travel-not parking. "

" give me liberty, that should not be a concern. there should be NO HANGOVER from 4-8 pm. people should move there car AT 6PM. people do this in cities all over the united states, so what is the reason that people in auburn shouldn't be able to figure this out. are the people really that much dumber? "

" One-side parking without alternating is better solution. It has all the benefits of alternate side parking, and none of the drawbacks. With alternating parking you still get people on both sides of the street from about 4pm to 8pm, with the occasional leftover from yesterday on the wrong side all day long.

Further benefit to one-side parking: you don't need to worry about moving your car.

Alternate side parking is just a scam to pump more money out of people in the form of parking tickets. "

" Not confusing one bit. Just remembering what the date is happens to be the most difficult part or maybe if you never learned what odd and even are? Listen 40 year old, 16 year old, 80 year old.. here is how you park a car according to our new law that's been effective through winter months for quite a while - do you understand? "

" I don't know how they could make it any less confusing. Put up electronic signs that say "PARK HERE!"??? I don't know what you people expect. It is done like this in every city and no one else seems to have any problems. On top of that, what do you consider a good alternative, would you rather they have it stated as midnight. then, everyone can set there alarms and wake up and change in the middle of the night? Come on, its not that difficult to understand. "

" The 6pm thing is exactly the same as how it is done in the winter months.

It's not confusing at all.

What is confusing is The Citizen jumping on the bandwagon with this stupid idea. "
