Our view: Hits & Misses

HIT: To people from Summer Hill and Moravia who recently hatched - and completed - a great plan to thwart theft and vandalism at a local park.
Recognizing that wooden picnic tables at the birthplace of former President Millard Fillmore were being damaged or stolen, a request was put in to Cayuga Correctional Facility for help. Workers at the prison have experience making concrete picnic tables that top the scales at about 2,000 pounds, so the two new tables they provided have a much better chance of staying put than tables made of wood.

MISS: To the announcement that 36 workers have been laid off at Auburn's TRW Automotive plant.

The jobs account for about 10 percent of the workforce at the local branch of the global auto component maker.

The company blames the layoffs on the weak automobile retail market in the United States.

We can only hope that the cuts are temporary and that production will pick up again.

HIT: To a prayer vigil organized to allow people from the Jordan and Elbridge community to get together and reflect on a recent tragedy.

Dozens of people showed up Sunday to offer support to the family of a couple who had been murdered in their home a week before.

The vigil gave community members a much-needed venue to share their collective grief and the support needed to help people move forward.

HIT: Admirers of old boats and cars had ample opportunity to check out a variety of both during two recent local events.

Antique boats, some that were built just after the turn of the century, were on display at the annual gathering in Skaneateles this past weekend; and classic and antique cars were on display by their proud owners at the annual show at Emerson Park in Owasco.

An added bonus for area businesses is the tourists - and the spending money - the two events always attract.
