It's been over five years since their 18-year-old son Sean Gummerson was killed in a car accident, but Craig and Linda Gummerson still find a way to honor his memory. Along with Port Byron teacher Angie Hargreaves, the Gummersons have made it an annual tradition to host the Sean W. Gummerson Memorial Golf Tournament. The event was held Sunday at Dutch Hollow Country Club
“I saw how Craig and Linda responded to this,” Hargreaves said of Sean's passing. “Being a parent now, I don't know how they were so thoughtful of those around them. They cared so much about how others were feeling and little about themselves. I wondered how they got through it and handled it the way they did. So we all decided to try the golf tournament out. I guess you could say it's worked pretty well.”
Over the past five years, one thing has been a fact - the support has only increased. The tournament always has around 20 volunteers, normally the same people each year, and this time around, there were 120 golfers participating. The tournament also includes prizes, earnings, a golf towel, a T-shirt and a steak dinner after the round.
Several volunteers, including Craig Gummerson, cook hamburgers and hot dogs for the golfers. The volunteers are referred to as “Sean's Angels” and all sport commemorative T-shirts.
“Linda and I tried to come up with a name for the volunteers,” Craig said. “And we decided on the angel part. Sean had a special smile so Linda designed a smiley face with a tongue sticking out.”
This year's sponsors truly showed their support to the Gummersons and Hargreaves. R.J. Jewelers donated jewelry while WYNIT-INK, Nucor and several golf organizations donated clubs and drivers for door prize usage.
“R.J. and WYNIT has shown great support every single year,” Hargreaves said. “They've been there for us every year of the five years we've done this.”
The tournament is broken down into two flights and the winning team of each flight wins all their money back. Second place takes back $120.
“So we are actually giving out six prizes for the tournament,” Hargreaves said. “We also have closest to the pin and longest drive awards handed out.”
Craig Gummerson couldn't help but give Hargreaves credit for helping out while also playing in the tournament.
“She finds time to do that which is amazing to me,” Craig said. “I always say next year I'll try, but have yet to. I would like to one of these years play in the tournament.”
The money that is and has been raised over the years goes straight to the Sean Gummerson Memorial Scholarship Fund.
“It has contributed to over 250 credit hours - the cost a junior or senior will pay for a Cayuga Community College course is covered by this award,” Craig said.
Sean had just started to get interested in golf before his passing.
“He played about eight to 10 times that year,” Craig said. “I would like to get into it.”
Craig and Linda Gummerson both acknowledged the fact that they are pleased with everything over the past five years. They would like to enhance their current website - www.keepasmileinyourheart.com - and use it as the ideal place to sign-up for the tournament.
“We couldn't have done this without the help we've received,” Craig said. “Who knows, maybe one year I'll actually be able to play in this tournament.”
