What happened in San Francisco with the illegal immigrants and crime is being ignored by the media because they love these illegal immigrants that vote Democrat.
Barrack Obama preaches this tax harmonization where every city, state has to have the same taxes, so everything is on the same playing field. That's Communism 101 and it's the end of this country if they get it through.
For four years I have lived on a street that has always been 12 months alternate side parking, according to the signs on the street. I have never seen it obeyed nor enforced so was amazed when they extended the law to all city streets, which they clearly cannot or will not enforce.
This is in regard to your article on the Skaneateles crosswalk violators. I agree that violators should receive tickets, but what about the hundreds of jaywalkers that dart in and out of traffic every hour?

Just having President Bush announce he is ending his moratorium on offshore drilling dropped the price of oil. Now if the do-nothing congress can get off their rear ends and actually bring this up for a vote (something that Pelosi and Reed haven't done knowing they will lose). Its not a total solution, but I would rather pay US oil companies that employ US workers than send money to the Middle East. Having our own oil sources while continuing work on solar, wind, tidal and especially nuclear and clean coal technologies will keep the price reasonable. We all want to end our dependence on foreign oil so we need to drill here and drill now. "

Farmer Guy, when he had his cows, only ever spread fresh manure (the smell of which is sweet and doesn't bother me), and he didn't have more animals than his own land could bear. He and his dad spread a little bit every day in summer and every other day in winter, on different fields so it never built up. None of this 3" deep fermented liquid nonsense I have seen repeatedly with my own eyes on fields around here.
That's what gets in our water supply and our lakes. That's what fouls our air and makes people sick. It's not the small farmer with a responsible number of animals his own land can support -- it's the greedy corporations with their thousands of animals, so many they go around begging others to let them spread manure on their ground, (and just spreading it thicker on their own when they can't find other ground), with their foreign workers sucking money and social services out of our communities, with their polluting our environment, making people sick, bringing down property values, creating a larger socio-economic divide and doing no good for any of us, just lining their own pockets at our expense.
Farmer Guy, who has farmed his whole life, as did his father and grandfather before him, feels even more strongly about it than I do -- probably because he has seen how many friends and neighbors have had their small family farms run out of business and their land eaten up by the corporate farms.
So, franklin, that's where you're wrong. Some people are indeed more sensitive to toxins than others, but the fumes coming off liquid manure ARE TOXIC and make no mistake about it. "

2. Chris -- no argument, that there will always be those who complain. If they are doing so to try to improve a messed up situation, more power to them.
3. I don't think Karl likes to even type the word "God" and prefers his own version, GOG. We all knew what he meant.
4. I never said nor even implied that people who vote Republican are idiots. I think both parties stink evenly. I do dislike certain candidates more than others, but it isn't because they belong to one party or the other. In my opinion, the American people have NO good choice on the ballot. But I have laid that out in detail before and don't feel like going over all of it again. I've said why I plan to vote for Obama, but it sure isn't because I think he's a good choice.
5. Actually, I just saw poll results yesterday which showed McCain with 40% and Obama with 49% - that's a little better than 50/50 in favor of Obama, whatever that means.
6. If the church shooter pleads guilty and there are all those witnesses to boot, that's a very good case for the death penalty -- extremely little room for doubt or error.
7. Leaving on my first trip to California in the morning -- Long Beach for a conference. Not looking forward to the long trip with multiple connections and the miserable time change (not from someone who already runs on a schedule a good 2-3 hours earlier than most folks. But -- not only is it an important conference for me and my institution, but I will also get to meet up with a man (and his wife) whose grandfather played football with my grandfather when they were both sailors in the Navy in the 1930s. The Navy itself has no records of the football teams coached by Hall of Fame coach Tom Hamilton or any other football outside of Annapolis, but this fella found a treasure trove of program, team photos and mementos his grandma had saved in the attic, and was kind enough to share them with me -- very special in deed. I look forward to repaying a tiny portion of the debt by taking him and his wife to dinner.
Wish me a safe trip. I used to love to fly on the rare occasions when I got to, but nowadays, it seems like if the plane doesn't plain fall out of the sky, you deal with delays, missed connections, lost or destroyed luggage and nothing but grief. "

AN interesting take from an investment banker:
http://www.peridotcapitalist.com/2008/06/would-offshore-drilling-bring-down-gas.html
"Given that world demand for oil is rising so much, the offshore oil we may be able to drill out of the ground would have little impact on gas prices because the oil market is a worldwide exchange. If we just had a U.S. oil market, then yes, it would have a decent impact, but that is simply not the case.
As a result, it is hard to see how more offshore drilling would impact gas prices at the pump in any measurable way. Even if world oil consumption was held constant, we could potentially increase global supply by about 2%. An equal drop in price would bring $4.09 gasoline down to $4.00 per gallon. It just does not help solve the real problem.
That said, it would certainly prevent our energy dollars from being shipped to the Middle Eastern oil-rich countries, so we could keep that money here. Of course, that means our oil companies in the U.S. will make even more money than they are right now" "

I'd rather vote for a candidate with true morals and NO religious beliefs.
On the subject of the death penalty: I am still in favor of it. Here's an analogy: Police Officers are trained not only HOW to use deadly force, but also WHEN to use it. They spend a lot of time on this -- and for good reason. But when the crunch time comes, it is down to the officer to decide, usually in a split second, whether to fire the trigger or not, whether it is justified to save others or him-/herself, etc. We would not want to take guns and the right to use deadly force away from cops because it has happened on occasion that one of them made a wrong choice at that moment. It's a tragedy, but a tragedy that happened because someone was trying to do the right thing, not some serial killer blowing people away for kicks.
I see the death penalty as analogous -- except in this case, there is a lot longer deliberation, consideration, examination -- i.e. a full-blown trial. The chance for people to be wrong will never be zero, but it has to be a lot less after a full trial than it is in the split second it takes a cop to decide whether or not to pull a trigger. Both actions are taken specifically to prevent a criminal from repeating his/her crimes as a way to protect others.
The way things stand in prisons now, there is an organized criminal network which extends from inside the prisons to outside the prisons, such that merely locking someone up will not necessarily prevent him/her from continuing to participate and even direct crime.
Prisons should not be "inhumane" but nor should they be country clubs. The guy in Arizona goes too far, but he is reacting to a situation which leans too far in the other direction. We could use a sensible medium on that score. "

I feel the same way when they dance around trying to show they will do whatever they are asked to please the corporations (including but not exclusively the financial ones on Wall Street) by backing NAFTA and not coming down hard and fast on predatory lenders.
Of course, seeing John McCain with his smug little sh*t-eating grin saying how he would move the capital of Israel to Jerusalem immediately is beyond sick -- no better way to insure the advent of never-ending all-out war in the Middle East than to tip the unstable balance in favor of the area's least local favorite of the three religions in that city they all share as holy. If he really wants unending war, that's the way to get it rolling. As I've said before, that man is not merely elderly, he is DANGEROUS to all of us.
I do respect AJ's decision to vote for a candidate he can stomach. I spent many years not voting at all, refusing to play along with the game where we all pretend we have a choice in whom we elect. But at the same time, by dropping out of the system, I was also playing into the hand of those who love to whittle away our rights, making it easier for them to have their way. It's a pretty lose-lose situation, with the deck stacked so hard against the average joe voter that we are rendered largely impotent.
When I did start voting again, I used to write in my mother's name -- at least I was exercising my right to vote, but I could not stomach the candidates who made it onto the ballot. My motto was "The Lesser of Two Evils is Still Evil." And that is still true.
But in this election, I feel I have to cast the vote most likely to be effective against McCain. I don't like it. On many issues critical to me, I detest Obama's position as much as McCain's. It does not surprise me to see Obama selling out in whatever way his handlers think will be best for gathering the political support he needs to win the election -- but it still makes me sick.
I might stomach it a little better if I believed for one minute he was just doing it to be elected and would revert to a position I could stand behind after the election. But I don't think the bending to fit the image the corporations and special interest groups want to see will change one lick once a candidate is in office.
You won't see me posting hoorah for Obama. You won't see me defending him against many of the legitimate criticisms leveled at him. (Occasionally I feel compelled to refute some of the stupider and more ad hominem attacks). But unless McCain kicks the bucket a week before the election, I'll feel forced to vote for Obama just to keep McCain out of the White House. "

That anyone might suggest he could win is merely a projection in the wishful thinking sense.
Progressives have really ticked me off this year especially - they had no business getting behind Hillary OR Obama in the first place. Kucinich would have been a much better bet - his policies and platform align quite harmoniously with joe six pack. You and I know, and the polls show it, that most people support liberal ideals.
We desperately need to support a party/candidate that most closely matches our ideals - and the Democrats are not cutting it (Kucinich is one of the few exceptions). They've aided and abetted the most corrupt administration in history. They are virtually two sides of the same coin. They are both way too beholden to special corporate interests, which is the main problem to begin with.
We'll never get anywhere unless we stand up for what we believe in and defeat the self-fulfilling prophecy that is projected onto us by a corporate media with an agenda. I am very tired of THEM deciding who can win and who cannot.
Well, that's how I see it anyhow, FWIW.
On another note, do you by any chance know what the nightlife/music scene is like at Sodus Point? Was thinking about biking up there to check it out - seems like a nice little ride. "

NOT IN THE VOTING BOOTH.
Since you can admit that the election is somewhat rigged, why waste your vote on a non-starter who hasn't a snowball's chance of being elected? I pray there's not many more who will follow your lead. I understand that for you, your vote is an expression of what you believe in, but I, for one, would shelf that luxury in order to remove ANY CHANCE--no matter how small--that another Neocon lackey, i.e., McCain--leads this country further toward the brink!
Seriously--die for your principles HERE, but vote sensibly in November, lest you want to spend 4 more years hating yourself. "

Before I go further, I'll answer your question about who I intend to vote for though I have mentioned it here before. McKinney. She is the only one left with any principles AND the gumption to stand up to the criminals. Did you see her grill Rummy? It's too bad so many so called progressives are putting their weight behind Obama, this really confuses me. McSame - NOT ON YOUR LIFE.
Save the spoiler issue for another discussion though, I am aware of that possibility, but doubt it'll have any effect. Who's going to vote for a corpse anyhow?
If you ask me, the people pulling the strings are AIPAC and Wall St. The election is just staged theater. It doesn't matter who's in office to the degree we'd like to think. Certainly not since Reagan came in and stacked the deck.
My point was that we should not expect much from a man who appears to be more rhetoric than substance. I am not basing that on anything I've heard from Conservatives - which is absolute rubbish - it is based on his own statements, voting record, my understanding of history, and the sense that I get he will simply be more of the same, albeit with a nicer demeanor. The fundamental underlying imperial ambitions of the US will not change a bit, nor will the growing income inequality, not to mention dwindling opportunities.
The corporatocracy is still in complete control, and Obama is not going to challenge/change that. They're the ones he's dancing with - he appears to have made that perfectly clear. While his talk of hope is inspiring, his record and statements aren't.
On top of all of this, anyone who voted for John Negroponte, a war criminal from the Reagan era, as National Intelligence Director, is simply not fit to govern in my opinion.

The mere fact that the Neocons/Republicans have sunk to the levels that they have in order to discredit and "SwiftBoat" Obama should clue you in to what is at stake here.
It doesn't matter ONE BIT to me who is advising Barack--you have to "dance with the ones who brung ya" to some extent in Washington. And don't you think that Obama is smart enough to know that he has to move to the middle more in order to get those uncommitted votes?
Secondarily, tell me--so what's the other option? Vote for BLATANT McSame?!
WHo'd you rather take your chances with--an OBVIOUSLY duplicitous snake like McCain, with his Neocon tendencies, promises of more of the same Bushcrap, and complete lack of principles? (He has endorsed Torture!) or ANYONE ELSE?!
I don't think I've made myself clear on this--sometimes my sense of humor undermines my message. My "enthusiasm" for Obama is not absolute or even rabid. I simply see A-N-Y-O-N-E as BETTER THAN ANOTHER REPUBLICAN NEOCON!
I can't believe that people don't get this!?
It's seriously beyond my comprehension!
P.S. With all due respect, AJ--that website you sent me to seems like the kind of site that will decry and criticize anything and everything it can --kind of like a uber-cynical site. I generally try not to get my information for such extremes. They are no different than Faux in their feigned "indignation" at things like "Obama opposes Peace in Israel/Palestine"--give me a break. Obama said that We Must Preserve Our Total Commitment to Our Unique Defense Relationship with Israel"--well, DUH? Of course he had to say that--would you expect him to commit political suicide by going to AIPAC and lecturing them about their Crimes Against Humanity and Human Rights violations in the West Bank? Sheesh!
People who have no comprehension of Pragmatism bore me.
Are you sure they're not a Conservative site masquerading as a Liberal one? "

Not "rooting" for anyone, Chris--but certainly not on the side of the Neocons and their twisted dreams of world domination.
It's sad--but predictable--that anything that doesn't ring of "AMERIKA UBER ALLES!!!" is, in your warped view, "rooting for the enemy"--no matter how close to the Truth it is.
Guess what, Chris--we supported "free elections" in Palestine, and HAMAS got elected. You don't "win" a war just by killing so much of the enemy that there's temporarily not enough combatants to form a resistance! Enemy combatants are a renewable resource! "

I agree - as a society we should ensure that people have a reasonably decent chance at a comfortable life. That some people have a better life in prison doesn't speak well of our society does it?
As for Joe, how many people have died of a result of his barbaric and inhumane treatment? Do you know? "

One writer likened him to a "Republican hawk in Kennedy clothing." From everything I've been reading I would have to concur with that.
As for change? Well, I don't see anything but a continuation of imperial ambitions. Obama has already said he wants to maintain the military at current or higher levels, has no plans to hold the Bush administration accountable.
Many of his advisors are war criminals from previous administrations, republican and democrat alike. New director, same play, same actors, etc etc etc. The deeper down the rabbit hole, the more I begin to believe that all of this is nothing but theater.
Perhaps I am wrong - maybe Obama is just saying a lot of stuff and voting a certain way just to avoid the same thing that happened to Dean, but that doesn't really wash for a multitude of reasons.
Anyhow, I can't vouch for the entire site, (in fact, I have growing doubts about peak oil) but I ran across this page which details a LOT of the reasons Obama cannot be trusted pulled from many sources. His associations and his voting record say an awful lot about him, and little of it is worth getting our hopes up over.

We "won" in Afghanistan too, until the militias regrouped and are now demanding our renewed commitment and attention.
The same will re-occur in Iraq, just give it time.
And for WHAT?
WHAT will/would be the "fruit" of "winning" this war even if you could assign that definition to it?
Permanent military bases in order to go to another war with Iran?
Control of the oil until the theft and fraud ignites another uprising?
Chris, you need to study History. Britain tried the same thing in Iran, and when that situation blew up, it was a direct cause of the rancor against AMerica in that part of the world today.
Do you really think that all those children of murdered and killed innocent Iraqi civilians are just going to grow up to love America and the American presence there in our permanent military bases?
Sheesh!--Don't be so naive! "

Limited, sometimes sharp fighting and periodic terrorist bombings in Iraq are likely to continue, possibly for years. But the Iraqi government and the U.S. now are able to shift focus from mainly combat to mainly building the fragile beginnings of peace — a transition that many found almost unthinkable as recently as one year ago.

Apparently you are not familiar with the concept of "beyond a reasonable doubt" as it applies in law. Many innocent people are convicted even though there is "no doubt".
You have far too much faith and ignorance in the justice system and too little respect for those who might get caught up in it by mistake. Like brew said, think about how YOU would feel if it were someone in your family or you yourself, or someone you knew? YOu'd be singing a much different tune.
If the system was infallible, you might have a defensible argument. But unfortunately it is far from it, so you do not have a leg to stand on.

RE College Education - I think that is a great idea - let them learn some skills so they won't be a drain on society when the get out. I don't mind my taxes going for that at all. But then I figure everyone has the right to a free education at least through jr college. "

" Execution will not bring back a loved one, but it will prevent that one murderer from ever killing any other person's loved one.
I do think it is critically important to have a very thorough trial and determine as certainly as possible the person is guilty. But once it has been determined a person is well and truly guilty, the executions should be prompt and not dragged out and expensive.
Every effort should be made to insure that innocent people are not executed -- the trade off of the risk is the absolute assurance that the guilty will never kill again, neither in prison nor out, nor run criminal activities from their jail cells, etc. "
As long as there are problems with our judicial system and lying witnesses, a death penalty is simply unwise and immoral. The numerous cases that were once considered rock-solid which later get overturned is simple proof of that.
And to look at it another way, prison is not exactly paradise, and I am sure is a worse punishment than death itself. But at least the innocent have a chance at life again. "
