SYRACUSE - A former firefighter who got drunk and accidentally shot a fellow firefighter at a fire station near Syracuse is getting five years' probation.
Stanley Memmelaar's sentence from state Supreme Court Justice John Brunetti is part of a plea deal in which the 27-year-old former Moyers Corners volunteer firefighter admitted to first-degree reckless endangerment.

Memmelaar offered an apology in court to victim Tyler Drake and the fire department.

The 21-year-old Drake wrote a letter read in court by his father, in which he detailed how his life has been changed by the shooting last October. Drake questioned the leniency of the penalty.

Memmelaar admits he was handling his .45-caliber handgun recklessly when it discharged and hit Drake in the arm.
