Village's new historian has stories to tell

I look forward to being the historian for the village of Port Byron, a position previously held by Penny Helzer. It is with Penny's spirit that I will continue the feature articles about the history of Port Byron and its people.
Penny truly would have made a hearty pioneer. She was gifted with determination and a drive to push ahead, no matter what was ahead.

Like many of you, it was this quality that I found so endearing about her. I knew Penny not only as our historian but also as a friend.

I may revisit some of the pioneer settlers that she has already introduced to you, should there be additional information to share.

In addition, I welcome the opportunity to write the stories about the “Average Joe.” After all, where would the prominent business leaders be without the steady work force that contributed to their success?

Port Byron is filled with what I like to call “the movers and the shakers” of the community.

They are people with great versatility and ingenuity. To make ends meet, they took whatever jobs they could.

It is this adaptability that makes Port Byron such a rich community in history. I've followed many families that perhaps started out as a boatman yet in the future they became painters or coopers.

Even those with technical skills can be found working in our community as laborers, such as a nurse working at the local shirt factory as a seamstress. Their stories are yet to be told.

History was a subject that I always struggled with as a kid. Keeping names and dates straight was always a challenge.

Then when I became interested in my own family roots, history took on a different meaning and became so much fun.

Little did I realize that we live in a community so rich in history.

I hope parents will introduce their children to the many discoveries of their past. When you can place your own family in local, regional and even national events, it makes history come alive.

It is with Penny's spirit that the torch has been passed. I hope I can make her proud. My family is an old time family of Port Byron.

I look forward to continuing the comprehensive and entertaining articles that you are accustomed to.

Reminder:

Port Byron Heritage days are just around the corner - Aug. 1 and 2. We hope to see you!
