Weather interrupts play again

AUBURN - Mark Sobolewski continued his hot streak and Joel Collins crushed his second home run of the season, but it was the weather that stole the spotlight at Falcon Park on Saturday.

Doubledays center fielder Chris Demons throws the ball back to the infield after a first-inning Williamsport hit during Saturday's game at Falcon Park. The game was suspended with Auburn leading 7-6 in the seventh inning. The game will be completed today at 5:30 p.m.
The Auburn Doubledays held a slim 7-6 lead over their rival in the standings, Williamsport, with two outs and a 2-1 count on Steve Susdorf in the top of the seventh before a serious downpour and intermittent lightning suspended the game. After a 30-minute delay, the decision was made to resume play at 5:30 p.m. today, followed by a complete nine inning game, the finale of the series.

The game could have been called official after five innings, but with the two teams neck-and-neck at second place in the Pinckney Division, it was understandable the close contest be decided in nine innings.

The Crosscutters put up three runs in the first frame off Doubledays starter Matt Wright, who lasted two innings -- just 11 batters.

Auburn came thundering back in the bottom of the inning when Adam Amar, Sobolewski, Collins and Brian Van Kirk drove in consecutive runs. Amar, Sobolewski (double) and Van Kirk earned their RBIs off hits, while Collins hit a sacrifice grounder with one out. Jacob Diekman got the start for the Crosscutters, lasting five innings but allowing all seven runs off eight hits.

Auburn extended its lead with two runs in the third, courtesy of a Van Kirk two-run double to score Sobolewski and Collins.

Sobolewski had reached base on a single to right field, his seventh straight hit over the last two games. After Travis d'Arnaud roped a double to bring in Brandon Haislet in the fifth, Collins responded with his blast over the left field wall to give Auburn a 7-4 lead after five innings.

Jay Monti went out to the mound in relief of Wright, lasting 3 1-3, but allowing three more runs to close the gap again. Daniel Hargrave sank in a double off of Jason Roenicke, who replaced Monti just one out into the sixth.

Susdorf and Hansawa belted consecutive singles off Monti to start the inning. Hansawa later scored on a wild pitch in the wild game. The Doubledays would like to escape today's first game with the win, especially since first-place Jamestown ended Saturday in a similar situation. The Jammers' contest with Mahoning Valley was suspended due to weather after three innings and will likely get made up today.

When Auburn gets out of the top of the seventh, with two outs and Cody Overbeck on second base, Sobolewski will begin the bottom half of the inning with Sean Grieve on the mound for the Crosscutters.
