The New York State Police arrested Owasco's highway superintendent Thursday on allegations that he falsified a time sheet.
According to state police investigators, Michael L. Wilson, 47, of Owasco Road, Auburn, is accused of submitting a time sheet in July 2006 that contained false information. The alleged time sheet was not Wilson's, but it was for a town employee, state police stated.
Authorities have charged Wilson with one felony count of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing and a misdemeanor count of second-degree falsifying business records, according to the state police.
State police investigators and the state comptroller's office began looking over government files in the Town of Owasco last August. The Cayuga County District Attorney's Office has also been involved in the investigation, and District Attorney Jon Budelmann confirmed Friday afternoon that Wilson's arrest was connected to that investigation.
Budelmann would not say whether he expects more charges or arrests, but he did say the investigation is ongoing.
Owasco Town Supervisor John Klink stated Friday in a prepared statement that he was “stymied” by the charges. The town board was made aware of a “clerical” error“ in 2006 and agreed after speaking with Wilson that there was no wrongdoing, Klink stated.
Klink described Wilson as “a fine individual with an outstanding work ethic,” and stated that thinks the judicial system will agree with the 2006 board.
“The basis for our American judicial system is the concept of innocent until proven guilty,” Klink stated. “I know that the people of Owasco will extend that belief to (Wilson).”
The town board will meet next week over the issue, Klink stated.
