U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said he plans to pursue legislation aimed at crippling the international methamphetamine supply coming into New York state.
While past legislation had cracked down on domestically grown methamphetamine and limited the accessibility of common ingredients such as pseudoephedrine, producers in Canada, Asia and Mexico had increased production to supply the addiction, Schumer said in a news release.
Schumer called Wednesday for a three-point attack that would limit drug trafficking by taking a stronger educational stance in the schools by teaching children about the drugs side effects, by stepping up the Drug Enforcement Agency's efforts at the border and by strengthening and modernizing the regulations which limit the purchase of precursor ingredients from local drug stores.
Schumer's call for action came after data revealed that the seizure of meth factories in New York had decreased while the number of meth related arrested had increased. The DEA also released a report at the same time, discussing the increase in Canada's production which was specifically being targeted at upstate New York.
“We cannot let our gains in placing tough, strict enforcement policies on meth production and abuse across Upstate New York just slip away,” Schumer said in a press release. “We must actively seek out ways to wipe out this problem from every angle.”
