Watch for storms on golf course

You head out to the golf course on a perfect day. The weather forecast says a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm so you figure it is going to be a great day to play.
It is your favorite tournament. Things look green and lush as you arrive at your course.

You find your name on the list, load your bags on the cart and wait for the shotgun start so you can head out to your starting hole.

The whistle blows, a few hours go by and you get engrossed in your golfing experience. The thing you did not notice is that the skies are beginning to darken and thunder lurks off in the distance.

After a short while, the air horn blows, signaling that lighting and rain are imminent, so you are obliged to leave the golf course. You would be foolish to do otherwise.

Those in charge are most likely watching the radar on a computer screen and know when a violent weather situation is developing, despite what the weather man said on television before you left your house. Those warnings are sounded for a reason.

The skies quickly open, and has happened often in the last few years, heavy rain falls and soon the golf course is full of water. Standing water is everywhere, the skies begin to clear, and the sun shines once again. So it is once again time to play.

You wait for the signal to resume play, but nothing seems to be going on. A few carts ride the course, and you have to wait a little longer to restart your round. It is not what you see in the sky, like the sunshine, but the water that is on the ground that is the problem.

Golf courses have hills and valleys, and golf carts only ride well when they have traction. So your round is delayed a little longer until enough water has drained so it is again safe to drive around the course.

You get the OK and proceed to where you were when the warning sounded.

If you have played golf for any length of time, especially the last few years, you know how quickly turf can become soft and wet. Safety first is a good motto. Know that professionals are handling the situation and that every decision is done in your own - the golfer's - best interest. Rain delays are inevitable. Go with the flow.

Excellus sponsored a golf day this past Wednesday at Dutch Hollow. It was a great idea and a great way to get people on to the golf course for a minimal fee.

The Dutch Hollow event had a scramble division and a Callaway division and was enjoyed by more than 60 golfers. Scramble division winners were Tony LoCastro, Ed Ozaroski, Bob Deline and Jim Hodge. Second place went to Joanne and Peter Bauman and Zach Lubert and Marsha Lubert. Third place went to Joe Daloia, Don Kober, Dave Dec and Lou Lombardo. Callaway division winners were Buzz Underwood with a 72, followed by Ray Rosenberger, Bob Hawkins, Rich Kryzak, Ron Curvin, Sherwood Short, Stan Smith, Jim Warren, Lewek, Dave Kearney, and George Schmid.

Nancy Hart won the Dutch Hollow Ladies Presidents Cup this past weekend. Sue Furst and Sue Giltner tied for second. Kathy Jo Champion was fourth, Kathy Kusnierczyk was fifth, followed by Nancy Mazzeo, Mary Mazzeo and Nancy Lorentzon.
