Skaneateles cracks down on pedestrian crossing violations

SKANEATELES -- Between the lake, the vibrant downtown, and the busy streetside businesses, pedestrians are drawn to Skaneateles streets during the summer.
To encourage a safer walking environment, the Skaneateles Police Department is trying a tactic to make motorists more aware of the laws stating they have to yield to walkers in marked pedestrian crossings.

As part of the ongoing effort, the department has plain clothes officers using the crosswalks while marked patrols observe and pull over any violators.

Officers first did the enforcement effort on Tuesday and issued 12 tickets, primarily for the crosswalk violations.

Skaneateles Police Chief Lloyd Perkins initiated the effort in response to resident complaints and several near misses.

This detail is similar to an enforcement effort the Chicago Police Department uses.

In addition to the enforcement details, regular patrol units will watch for any violations in crosswalks.

" Live in Auburn...where the police do absolutely nothing about people caught on tape breaking my windows and throwing a brick at my dog. Great Job APD! "

" I agree that cars need to stop in for pedestrian crossing areas. Safetly comes first especially when there are so many children around during the heavy tourist seasons. On the other hand, if pedestrians actually crossed in the crosswalks instead of anywhere they please, it would be much easier to drive in downtown Skaneateles. Stopping at one or two crosswalks is easy to look out for (especially when they are marked). Stopping every ten feet for those who want an easy cross to the Sherwood or Morris' is a pain in the rear. "

" I really enjoy reading the comments posted daily and believe most people put a lot of thought in their comments. But again there is always a stupid comment or one lacking any thought, and todays stupid comment goes to (ericaeln2003)I don't know where you live, but in Auburn I feel the cops do a great job, and there job isn't easy. " I think you could crack down on this one in almost any town in the U.S. I've had close calls too, plus confusion when I slow to stop and the pedestrians, who are so used to cars not obeying the rules, stand tehre and don't want to cross (I don't blame them). Bravo for the enforcement! "

" I can't believe the Skaneateles Police Department is that bored, that this is all they have to do to pass the time. I'm sure if town leadership allowed them to go after bigger "fish" there would be alot of felony arrests to be had.

As a matter of fact, yesterday I did stop for three teenagers in the cross walk, and a woman in a SUV drove around me and nearly hit them. She was too busy on her cell phone, and yelling to me as to why I stopped in the middle of road when she nearly hit two of these girls.

This woman was so wrapped up in her own little world and breaking as many driving laws as possible. At this rate she is going to eventually hurt or kill someone.

I still believe Skaneateles Police Department has more important work to be done than setting up crosswalk stings! But if got to do it, you might as well get as many offenders as possible! "

" Well. This works both ways. The motorist
has no concern, and neither does the pedistrian.Laws are made to be broken,s
o what else is new.A person of habit,as
people are doing what they have always done. When the police are not there,it j
ust continues,as before.In China they g
ive tickets to people who do not cross
at marked crossings.A restrictive fence
is in the center of the road for miles
to stop walkers.However,when the police
leave, its business as usual, and the cro
ss walks are ignored, and the fence is t
raversed by the hearty. There are no real close cross walks in skaneateles w
hich are helpful, but better than other
small villages.However,this is a great
money maker for the village, and the pol
ice can be noted for doing their job.(O
nce I seen a person start a fire,to the
jewelry building next to the alley by the bank.I called the police, and they called the fire dept,as I still had put
the fire out by myself. They came later,
and no one asked me any questions, nor '
did they accuse me,of doing it.The bosrds were charred,.Not one person gav
e me any thanks,not even the owner.)Thi
s is good, the police have something to do,rather than some real work.If anyone
gets hurt, let the motorist and pedistrian settle the problem and watch
out for each other. Why does everyone fe
el the police have to look over them all the time, for their own common-sense
. "

" Probably not a good idea for Auburn...the cops hardly work as it is. They really don't need anymore excuses to stray from their real job...and you wouldn't nearly get hit if you paid attention. "

" Movedsouth, I remember Jack Loveland, he was a good cop and your right, nobody J walked at the four corners uptown. I met his widow a couple years ago and we spent about a hour talking about her husband, as I said before, he was a good cop and a nice guy. "

" If Jack Loveland was around, we could send him there! Anyone remember him? You didn't jay walk with him on duty. "

" They should try this in downtown Auburn & ticket violators there who have no regard for those walking in crosswalks. I have been nearly hit many times. "
