Paterson signs law that adds restrictions on violent video games

ALBANY -- New York Gov. David Paterson says a bill he signed will lead to restrictions on video game violence.
The law will create an advisory council to study the effects of violent games on the children who play them. It will also require parental controls on game consoles by 2010 and prominent displays of age ratings on game packages.

But the group Americans for Tax Reform and other critics say this latest state effort is a hollow political gesture that will cost taxpayers when it is ruled unconstitutional in court. Nearly a dozen other states have already had similar measures struck down.

Violations of the new labeling and parental control provisions could result in $100 civil penalties, far from the state prison sentences proposed earlier by New York lawmakers.

" It's my Personal opinion that the government in so many ways over step there rights to invade a citizens rights. Having said that, I'll this preposal. It isn't the state the should be monitoring the youth of today. It's the Parents or Guardians job.

Let's have the Government officials try to keep on task of running the city, county, state, and union, instead of wasting time and Money on non governmental issues as this.

Thank you and Good Night. "

" Game manufacturers make millions on new games and you're going to stop them with $100 fines. Babysitting laws are not needed. Games already have a rating system and parents can monitor what their kids play. You might have a law restricting retailers from selling games to kids under the age of the rating. Currently that is only enforced by retailers voluntarily. A state law might help with confiscation of games as the penalty. "
