The Auburn Nationals' Austin Duger slides safely into third base during the first inning against Seneca Falls in the District 5 Pony League championship game at Emerson Park, Sunday.
Duger led off the game with a triple and eventually scored as part of a 3-for-3 day as the Auburn Nationals defeated Seneca Falls 12-3 in the District 5 Pony League championships game Sunday at Emerson Park.
After Duger's triple, Joe Dyson put Auburn on the board early with an RBI single.
“It felt nice to come up with that hit,” Duger said.
It wouldn't be the only time Duger came up big. After Victor Martinez tied the game, 2-2, with a run-scoring triple, Duger (three RBIs) drove in Martinez to put Auburn up for good.
“It felt good to know be able to contribute,” Duger said. “I was proud to be able to.”
Dyson did his job on the mound for Auburn, going 4 2-3 innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs, three walks, and striking out six.
“I was able to locate my pitches pretty good today,” Dyson said. “It was key for me to pitch it in different spots.”
Dyson also did his share at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
The sixth inning was the biggest of them all for the Nationals, who scored six runs off of four hits in the frame. Duger struck again with both of his RBIs in the inning.
“Our strongest asset is our offense,” Auburn coach Z.B. LaDouce said. “From the top to bottom of our order we have guys that can keep the field on their toes. We will always put the ball in play and keep pressure on their defense. I feel that our hitting and pitching can carry us.”
Michael Biata pitched in relief of Dyson and he allowed just two hits. At the plate, Biata scored twice off and singled three times.
Steven Bennett finished with two hits, Nick Adams had a hit and scored twice, Ben Pinchak doubled and scored, Alex Burgmaster scored twice and singled, Anthony Torres finished with a hit and two RBIs, a single and Anthony Alberici walked, drove a run in and scored.
The celebration after the game led to a trophy presentation, spraying of sparkling grape juice and the pouring of Gatorade over the coach.
“It was pretty sweet to be a part of,” Biata said.
Torres was on the mound for the final out of the game as he tossed 1-3 of an inning and walked a batter. With the win, the Nationals now travel to Olean in which they will play in the Section I Minor League Championship. There they could play up to four games.
“We'll have some practices this week,” LaDouce said. “We just have to keep doing what we have been doing. There's a few things we need to work on and improve on. We will address those in practices and just relax, have fun no worries.”
The Auburn team consists of Dyson, Biata, Pat LaDouce, Steve Bennett, Ken Sargent, Torres, Adams, Burgmaster, Martinez, Duger, Pinchak, Clark and Alberici. Joining LaDouce on the coaching staff is Joe Dyson and Ken Sargent.
“It feels so awesome,” Z.B. LaDouce said. “These kids are so deserving of this. They worked so hard at this from day one. I'm so proud for them.”
