City needs the revenue being lost to gas tax cap

Monday, July 21, 2008 11:44 AM EDT

Of course the city should remove the cap on the gas tax! Local property taxes are a closed system. $300,000 in revenue for the city is $300,000 it will not have to look for in property taxes. The county should do this, as well. Please note that the Auburn schools have no such option!

" SCHOOL BOARD, YOU ARE OVER PAYING YOUR SUPERINTENDENT. We have 4 high schools, 13 middle schools, and 33 elementary ones within our school district (35,000 students) We have four assistant superintendents---finance,curriculum, personnel, and property assets. We pay our teachers above board (average for this area), but the administrators are paid just a notch better. Your super is paid $24,000 more a year than ours, WHY. "

" The problem is that if you raise taxes, less people are going to stop and get their gas here. Additionally, that means less people buying soda, candy, beer, and other items that are taxed at the full rate.

The problem with the morons on our local boards is that they continue to trip over dollars to pick up pennies. "

Local jobless rate climbs By The Citizen staff report

Saturday, July 19, 2008 11:56 PM EDT

Cayuga County's June unemployment rate was a full percentage point above prior-year levels, and it reached its highest point for the month since 2003, according to the latest state Department of Labor job market data.
The monthly unemployment rate of 5.1 percent was also higher than the 4.9 percent rate posted for May of this year.

The last time the June rate exceeded the 5-percent threshold was five years ago, when the rate was 5.3 percent.

Cayuga County's weakening job market is actually in better shape than most in New York. The statewide unemployment rate for June was 5.2 percent, up from 4.9 percent in May and 4.4 percent in June 2007.

State labor officials are not optimistic about the situation.

“Most indicators suggest the state's labor market conditions continue to deteriorate,” said Peter A. Neenan, director of the DOL's Division of Research and Statistics, in a press release. "

" Shove it, David!
Let the city eliminate some positions in the bloated local government first! "

" Who wouldn't like more money? But the difference is, the elected officials in the City happen to care about the tax burden, and they opt to control spending instead of raising taxes. This is something you have yet to learn Mr Lansford, but to be honest, you weren't alone. You had 7 other bobble heads bowing to the control of JD Pabis and his so called team of experts, and this includes Council hopeful Sam Giangreco. If you, or Sam wanted to control spending, you would have demanded that JD Pabis reduce the administrators he hired in his bloated administration. Instead you opted to ask, "no", I mean demand more and more from the public in spite of decreasing enrollment numbers and decreasing performance in our students, and in turn you supported a drop out rate that in truth was quite embarrassing. So you have no credibility Mr Lansford, not you or the rest of the board or does JD Pabis, you people have demonstrated where your loyalties lay, and they are not with the people who have selflessly supported this district for years without question. If you think you do then you're the one that is confused "
