After a 1 hour, 16 minute rain delay, the Auburn Doubledays turned a three-run deficit into a two-run lead with big swings from Joel Collins and Mike McDade. But Batavia retaliated with four more runs in the final three innings to win its first game over Auburn this season, 7-5 at Falcon Park on Saturday.
Auburn starter Matt Wright struggled on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits through four innings. The Doubledays could manage just one hit off Batavia's Josh Wright, a Chris Hopkins' single in the fourth.
With one out and two strikes on Brian Van Kirk, the downpour immediately halted the game.
When the contest picked back up, Van Kirk pelted an infield single to start the rally. Jon Del Campo dropped in his own single before Bryan Kervin sent them each into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. That's when Collins ripped a two-run single to put the Doubledays on the board.
An error and a walked batter loaded the bases for McDade, who busted a three-run triple to give the Doubledays their only lead of the game.
A Jon Edwards' home run in the sixth inning off Justin Cryer (0-2) put the Muckdogs within a run, before a Mark Sobolewski throwing error led to two more Batavia runs in the seventh.
Domnit Bolivar drove in an insurance run on a triple in the ninth.
With just one baserunner in the ninth due to a third Muckdogs error, the Doubledays (17-14) mustered a comeback, but Del Campo grounded out into a double play to finish the game.
Notes: Hector Cardenas earned his second win of the year, while Adam Reifer took home his eighth save. ... Not one Auburn player earned more than one hit in the loss. Six of Batavia's 11 hits were for extra bases. ... With his triple, McDade has now eight RBIs over the last four games. ... Auburn heads to Batavia today for it's only scheduled day game of the season.
