Auburn swimmer John Tehan prepares to jump in the Auburn YMCA-WEIU pool while practicing last year for the Empire State Games.
He will swim in the 2000m, 800m and the mile swim. The events start off with an opening ceremony at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at Binghamton University Soccer Stadium.

Swimming doesn't have any pre-spring training sessions for the Empire State games so Tehan has had to find his own time to work on placing better then his eighth place finish last year in the finals at the games.

“My friend Mallorie Dygert and I have had to find our way of practicing,” Tehan said. “We've had to go to the YMCA and also out to Skaneateles to work on our events.”

Dygert will be competing in the Scholastic Division in the 1500m events. Tehan said he has been preparing for the games along with the help from his high school coach Rich Hamburger and teammates.

“We've been lifting as a team during this spring,” Tehan said.

Tehan has set a list of goals that he has already accomplished one and that was making the team.

He now is focusing on placing better then his eighth place finish of last year and he would also like to earn a medal in the competitions.

“It's really neat to see them set it up like it's the Olympics,” Tehan said. “It's nice to see so different types of competitors. I see people from all over the state as long with people I don't know in my own region.”

Tehan would also like to do better then his 2:14 in the 2000m.

“It's new competition each year,” Tehan said. “So I'm unsure as to whether or not what to expect. I'm just really excited for this.”

Tehan said one difference between this year and last year is the competitiveness in the trials. He will compete July 24 and the 26 in the swimming competitions.

Skaneateles' Reid Swartz will also be joining in him in the Scholastic Division in the 1500m and 2000m events.

Joining Swartz and Tehan in the Scholastic division is a long list of competitors from Auburn, Skaneateles, Jordan-Elbridge and Moravia.
