Axton: Jobs are key to county's growth

Friday, July 18, 2008 11:46 PM EDT

I believe that the Legislature should make a couple of things a priority.
Seeking to bring manufacturing companies back into the area should be the primary focus. This would help to create new jobs that would employ many of the citizens in our community whom have lost jobs they once held within the manufacturing industry.

This business sector naturally creates additional jobs and companies that are needed to support a manufacturer's efforts, unlike many of the service sector jobs that you find in our county today, particularly Auburn.

By creating new decent paying jobs, the county would have more people contributing to the tax base which would in turn help to reduce the overall tax burden on the citizens of our county and increase the county's population.

Another area that I would to see focused on is what I refer to as neighborhood revitalization.

I would like to see a concentrated effort to work with the city, towns, and villages in our county to remove or rebuild structural eyesores in our communities.

There are many beautiful homes within our communities that have deteriorated and I think a lot of the reason is because there is a lack of owner occupied properties.

In my district, District 15, there are a significant amount of homes that could be revitalized and restored to the appealing appearance they once had.

I have reached out to neighborhood organizations like the Orchard Street Association and will reach out to others in my district to help them get the tools and support they need to turn these communities around.

I think it is pretty simple concept, that is not easily obtained but well worth the required efforts.

Create jobs that can employ many of the skilled workers that are still in our community before they all move away and create alluring peaceful neighborhoods for people to live in.

When we do this our community will prosper.

" I agree we need a single point person... why not the County Manager? Our ignorant Legislature brought him here dumped almost 250$K of YOUR money into this office, we might as well get SOMETHING for that money! Funny how the Legislature says "we need jobs in the County" out of one side of thier mouth, and out the other comes "hiring freezes" and "cut down the County workforce" hmmm.... cut down the workforce, who would suffer then? Obviously the one that was laid off but they will be laid off from services that YOU the taxpayer need and you can bet your taxes wont go down, but your access to County services certainly will. But its OK we got a 250K office in place that voters (taxpayers) had NO say in. Keep your workforce Cayuga County WE need them, quit spending money on STUPID things we dont need like the County Managers office!! I wont even get started on the WASTE of money the Legislature wants to blow on a "County Campus" !! "

" Well, I wasn't here to see it "alive" but compared to the other places i have lived, it doesn't appear to be dead. there are places that are much worse off than the finger lakes region. Honestly, it isn't that bad. There may be better places but there definitely are much worse. I would rather emphasize the positive and create a better attitude about the area, as it truly is wonderful. Whatever happened to community pride? "

" Well, i definitely agree that jobs are important to the counties growth. But, manufacturing companies staying in the united states and moving to new areas is not an easy thing to accomplish. They are not going to come unless you are willing to give MAJOR TAX BREAKS AND INCENTIVES. The process also needs to be streamlined. Who is the point person, THE POINT PERSON in which companies looking to come to the area should talk to. Not a different person for this development or that one, BUT ONE SINGULAR HUMAN BEING that EVERYONE knows is the point man. That is what the county needs. We don't have one. "

" Sad but true, manafacturing is dead in NY. We can not compete with the southern states let alone China. Our energy costs and taxes put us at a real disadvantage when we try to attract new industry.Until our property and state taxes are lowered, there will more companies and people leaving NY than moving here.
Eventually this state will go bankrupt. It's just a matter of time. "
