Auburn city officials and residents can see firsthand today the new voting machines disabled citizens will be able to use in the upcoming election.
The county Board of Elections will demonstrate the optical scan machines during the work session meeting of the city council. The county purchased the machines to comply with the 2002 Help America Vote Act, and the state Board of Election requires them to be demonstrated during public presentations.
The new machines are manufactured by Sequoia-Dominion and cost approximately $13,000 each. The county purchased nearly 60 of them for the upcoming election.
There will also be other public presentations of the voting machines 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Sterling Town Board meeting, 1290 State Route 104A, Sterling; 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn, 75 North St., Auburn; and 7 p.m. July 28 at 22 Central St., Moravia.
There will also be a public hearing concerning a city proposal to repeal the local cap on sales tax for gasoline. Though there is a public hearing, this meeting is scheduled as a work session and will not include a general public comment session.
Today's council meeting is also at 4 p.m. and will take place at Memorial City Hall, 24 South St.
