A motorcycle accident early Friday morning in Cato took the life of a Syracuse man, according to state police.
Christopher R. Hanlon, 38, died Friday when he and his motorcycle struck a sign post along Emerson Road in Cato.

According to a state police press release, Hanlon lost control of his 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle northwest on Emerson Road just past Town Line Road when he crested a hill, sliding off the south shoulder of the roadway. He suffered a fatal injury when he struck the sign post.

Hanlon, who was wearing a helmet at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Weedsport Fire Department and ambulance service assisted at the scene.

" Chirs was my steipbrother and a great guy all-around. Those of you writing the comments about the "insecure" people revving their motorcycles, please, this was not the type of person Chris was. This is a terrible tragedy and we will all miss him terribly. He left behind a wife and their 2 yr old daughter and a son due in 2 weeks. Please say a prayer for him and his family. Thank you. "

" I agree with "me" who wrote in... you people are unbelievable! First of all, the report never said anything about speed so you know nothing of whether he was speeding or not... whether he was driving responsibly or not... not every motorcycle driver rides like an idiot you know. Accidents happen.. just as they do in a car. I lost a family member as a result of a bike accident as well and regardless of what he was driving, he is gone, just as this young man is. Be a little more sensitive to the family he left behind people. You could lose someone you love tomorrow and not expect it. The way your comments read, you'd think he was a villain of some sort. Your lack of compassion is appalling and you should be ashamed of yourselves for posting those comments! "

" It never fails-the instant I get my child to sleep, some moron with what I'm sure are serious insecurity issues, goes racing down my street, revving their motorcycle. Why is this necessary on a small side street? What are they trying to prove? By showing off and driving like a fool, are they trying to make up for shortcomings elsewhere? Or they sit at a light revving they engines. Come on, get a life. No one over the age of about 20 is impressed by that. "

" I'm not complaining, but I get I get speed bikes and Choppers up our street, going for broke. This is in Auburn, but as long as they don't hurt anyone, and only take out themsevles...who cares. "

" just this morning i heard the same thing in my neighborhood and wondered the same thing as well... when will riders learn not to speed like that? all it takes is once for a small animal or even a large one to come out of nowhere and that is the end... I just hope and pray that this persons family can find comfort in their memories... "

" I wonder if this was the bike I heard early this morning. The engine was totally wound up as it was passing through my area and sounded as if it was going at a very high rate of speed. I wondered at the time if it was destined for a serious accident. "
