Summer is always hot at the Aurora Free Library. The Catch the Reading Bug summer reading program has had two terrific weeks so far.
David Kirk, author and illustrator of the well-known “Miss Spider” series kicked off the four week program. Kirk read from one of his favorite books, “How the Mole Got His Car” by Zdenek Miler and Eduard Petiska, which inspired his book “Miss Spider's New Car.”
Kirk explained that the Miss Spider books came to be because of his daughter Violet's love of bugs.
He said she would walk around gently holding one for the entire day. His first book “Miss Spider's Tea Party” did so well that he continued writing about her and her buggy friends.
After all library guests enjoyed a spider treat, Kirk led the children in drawing a few pictures.
He encouraged them to invent their own bug characters first from a squiggle. He drew a bug driving a car.
Biology Professor Tom Vawter from Wells College came this past week with loads of bugs for the kids to look at.
There were dragonflies, cockroaches, cicadas, lots of different flies, moths and butterflies and many mimicking insects.
The song “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly,” ants on a log snack and an awesome beetle craft rounded out the morning.
The program will continue for the next two Tuesday mornings.
Emily Howland art teacher Jacqueline Webster will do an art project with the children next week, and the following week lots of fun buggy activities will conclude the program.
The annual Teddy Bears' Picnic will take place at noon Saturday, Aug. 9. All teddy bear lovers are invited to bring their favorite bears and picnic on the library lawn.
After lunch, Tom Knight and his puppets will entertain all in the Morgan Opera House. Prizes will be awarded to all bears in attendance.
There are several other events happening this summer too.
Local photographer Jacci Farlow will lead area children in writing the third chapter of “Lionel and Lester the Two-Headed Lake Dragon” from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 23. Children will envision the next adventure and illustrate it.
This summer the library is encouraging children entering fifth through 12th grades to read by having them enter to win an MP3 player each time they read a book.
The drawing will take place Tuesday, Aug. 5.
As the summer comes to an end there will be a musical performance by Susan May's piano and voice students highlighting the 1960s to benefit the Morgan Opera House at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15.
Hope you can join us and Catch the Reading Bug this summer in Aurora or at your local library.
The Aurora Free Library is open from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
