A different field

The Auburn Doubledays are always thinking of ways to allow players to interact with fans.
This past year, general manager Carl Gutelius, former assistant general manager Kevin Breen and current director of group sales Travis Tarr thought of the perfect idea - an annual golf tournament.

The Doubledays decided to team up with the Make-A-Wish foundation for the event.

“It's always a special thing to donate time and money to a well-organized charity,” Tarr said.

The winners of the first annual Auburn Doubledays Golf Tournament was the group of Scott Roe, Dan Davis, Charlie Winslow and Doubledays pitcher Jason Monti, with a score of 59 in the Captain-and-Crew format.

“(Monti) was a putting machine for us,” Davis said.

Monti credits his schedule as a pitcher to his skills on the golf course. Monti is between a 10 to 15 handicap.

“We have eight players on the team that play the most,” Monti said. “Us pitchers have the most time to play. We've got nothing else to do.”

The team of Roe, Davis, Winslow and Monti all agreed on one thing - the money raised was going to a worthy cause

“It's a great team to be associated with,” said Sugarman Law Firm's Steve Pesarchick, a main contributor to the Make-a-Wish foundation. “The Doubledays have been great with their participation for a great cause.”

The Doubledays were able to have 13 teams in the first annual tournament and over 14 hole sponsorships from businesses in Auburn.

Sugarman Law Firm was the main sponsor of the event.

“We had a great turnout for a first year,” Savannah Bank President and Doubledays CEO Tom Ganey said. “It just shows you how great this community is. They always seem to come together and support the Doubledays. Sugarman and Make a Wish do a lot for Auburn and it's just a great way to give back to them.”

The tournament gave out many awards, including one for the longest drive, which went to Shawn Ganey.

“I thought my drive was to the left,” Shawn Ganey said. “But the trees brought it back and it turned out to be a nice drive.”

Despite the Sunday rain and damp conditions, the turnout was one that the Doubledays hope to build on.

“We will definitely keep this going,” Tarr said. “It's nice to give all of our proceeds to Make-a-Wish and we just hope to add more teams as the years progress.”

The winners of the tournament won season tickets for next season, as well as Doubledays gear and memorabilia.

“This was a great turnout,” Pesarchick said. “It's just really special to be able to give back to something like Make a Wish.”

Roe, Davis and Winslow, better known for their involvement with the Deck Crew at home games, will be putting the season tickets to a good use.

“We will look to find someone to donate them to,” Davis said. “We will find a good home for them.”
