The two state senators representing Cayuga County have considerable campaign war chest advantages over their challengers, according to the latest financial disclosure reports.
Republican Sen. Michael Nozzolio and Democratic Sen. David Valesky easily have the largest campaign fund balances among candidates seeking to represent parts of the county as of July 15, the latest date for financial data to be filed with the state Board of Elections.
Nozzolio has $570,435 on hand for his re-election effort to the state Senate 54th District.
His Democratic opponent, Paloma Capanna, reported $27,180 in cash on hand.
Since the last reporting deadline in mid-January, Nozzolio raised $196,269 and spent $142,663.
Capanna brought in $28,755 while she spent $14,896.
Nozzolio did not have a challenger in the 2006 race.
In the other local Senate race, Republican challenger James DiStefano has a $31,662 balance in his bid for the 49th state Senate District seat.
The incumbent, Valesky, has a considerable advantage at this point with $191,671 on hand.
DiStefano reported receiving $35,445 during the reporting period, while spending $3,783.
Valesky brought in $94,323 while paying out $31,072.
In 2006, Valesky defeated a challenge from former Republican Assemblyman Jeff Brown in a race that saw the state political parties pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into the respective campaigns.
In the race for the 123rd state Assembly District, which is a rematch from the 2006 contest, Democratic challenger Barbara Abbot King has $715 while incumbent Republican Gary Finch has a $1,419 deficit.
King, who reported a deficit as of mid-January, raised $3,177 over the past six months while she spent $1,897.
Finch raised $7,799 and spent $18,646.
Incumbent Republican Assemblyman Brian Kolb has a $51,618 balance for his 129th Assembly District campaign, compared with $1,149 for Democratic challenger Noah Sargent.
Kolb raised $43,735 during the reporting period, while he spent $42,476.
Sargent received $7,235 and spent $6,096.
Kolb was not contested in 2006.
