Sennett restaurant told to "cease and desist"

Sennett's code enforcement officer has issued cease and desist orders to the owners of the Route 20 eatery that opened for ice cream last weekend without a town certificate of occupancy.
Paul Weiman Jr., along with town attorney Don Cheney, issued the orders in person Thursday afternoon that state Bonca's restaurant must stop operating until it has the proper certificate. The new restaurant has been battling with town officials for months over zoning issues.

After a court ruling earlier this spring backed up a town Zoning Board of Appeals decision that had allowed the project to move forward, Weiman last week issued a letter denying a certificate of occupancy that outlined a list of new issues. Despite the letter, Bonca's owners decided to open on Saturday for ice cream.

One of the Bonca's owners, Greg Rigby, said they have appealed Weiman's letter, which should clear the way for the matter to go before the ZBA. Rigby said a matter under appeal to the ZBA is automatically granted a stay under state law, so the restaurant plans to remain open despite the cease and desist order.

Weiman could not immediately be reached for comment.

" KA-CHING! That's the sound of the lawsuit cash settlement that Sennett is going to pay. SWISH! That's the sound of the political careers of the Sennett town board going down the drain. Why don't some concerned Sennett citizens picket the town hall? "

" It appears to me that Mr. Weiman needs a new line of work and is not working in an ethical mannor. What a headache for all residents. All that matters is the bottom line. As someone who goes by there everyday. I see happy customers coming in and out. That should be all that matters what the people want. By the customers showing up they have spoken. "

" I am embarrassed that my town officials and employees are failing to act rationally. Maybe its time for new leadership. Weiman isn't the only problem in Sennett. The assessors are corrupt as well. The assessments are so out of whack that it is impossible to determine which properties are actually comparable. Plus, the assessors and their family's home/business values seem remarkably low. Can you say corruption? "

" This is just one more example of overbearing, big government gone wrong. It is no wonder that the whole area is so depressed and depressing, and so many of the young people leave, rather than stay and start their own businesses. "

" Consolidate Sennett. The world will still turn AND be a less complicated and unhappy place. This is actually very funny. I am sharing this story with my neighbors. They had a misconception that NY was "Big City" lol. They enjoy these stories of CNY redneck activity. "

" Weiman has an ego problem! He's trying to be important in an unimportant job. His 15 minutes of fame is a joke and disgrace to Sennett. Your a small man Paul! Surprised you didn't call for a Deputy Sheriff for backup like you did the previous visit. "
