There won't be any sand or traps, but there might be an obnoxious windmill or two at this year's Mini Golf Tournament hosted by the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes.
Cindy Smith, executive director for the council, said the fundraising event will also have a raffle, a silent auction, games, a recycle sale and a dunking booth to give participants something to do between holes.
“It will be fun; we encourage everyone to come out,” Smith said. “There will be popcorn, music and awards.”
Music from Charlie's CDs' DJ will pump up this year's competitors as they attempt to master their putting technique on the 18-hole course. Awards will be given to the team that has the best score as a nonprofit organization, the best team 13 years old or younger, the best mixed youth and adult team and the top corporate agency team.
Players will also win a prize if they sink a hole-in-one.
“They will get a small medal, and we will announce their name really loud to everyone,” Smith said. “We just want it to be a really fun and festive atmosphere.”
The tournament will allow a person to enter as an individual or on teams of no more than four.
Some teams that represent local businesses have been rumored to be competing against each other for the best score and bragging rights, Smith said.
People who are not playing golf can move over to the recycle sale, which will sell new and used toys, landscaping equipment, blankets, lamps and other items donated by the community and local businesses.
Everyone will also be able to bid on jewelry, a computer system, gift cards and vouchers, hotel packages, wine and a smoke alarm at the silent auction.
The proceeds will be used to fund the organization's various programs, such as an education program for child care providers, subsidy assistance for families to meet the high cost of child care products, a nutritional program and a lending library, Smith said.
“The community has been so generous so far,” Smith said. “We have quite a few programs and it's nice seeing people offering their support.”
Anyone who wishes to participate in the tournament should sign up before coming to the event to get the best tee time, Smith said, but people would be able to show up and play.
Participants are also encouraged to play at their own pace and enjoy the festive environment regardless of their skill level.
“Some people can go through in no time at all and some people are dedicated players who like to concentrate and plan their shot,” Smith said. “And there are others like me who might just take a while to get into the hole. But I encourage everyone to come out; it will be fun.”
