The Auburn Community Federal Credit Union has reported that an unknown party is using the organization's name in an attempt to obtain personal information through a phone scam.
According to manager Sam Scro, credit union members and non-members have been receiving calls with computer-generated messages claiming to be from the company. The caller states that the person's Visa check card has been suspended, and that the person must dial the "Auburn Community Security office" to activate their card.
The provided number is fraudulent, and the calls appear to be meant to gather information for potential identity theft, Scro stated in a written release.
The credit union never asks for information such as birth dates, account numbers, card numbers, pin numbers or Social Security numbers, Scro stated.
Anyone who receives phone calls of this nature should notify the credit union at 253-2954 or call law enforcement. Scro said Monday that he has notified the Auburn Police Department about the scam.
Scro said the majority of the phone calls seem to have taken place Monday afternoon. He also said that Auburn Community Federal Credit Union representatives do not believe their records have been hacked, as both members and non-members have received phone calls.
"We know our computer system wasn't compromised," Scro said.
