Hits & Misses

HIT: To the increase in compliance with the state's seat belt law. Local police have recently beefed up enforcement of the law and say that more people are buckling up.
The state's law has been in effect for more than 20 years, so you would believe almost all drivers know enough to use their seat belt. But sometimes a reminder is necessary to get the point across.

The basic truth is that seat belts save lives, and it's foolish not to use one.

MISS: To an oil spill in Owasco Lake this week. A mower being used by a work crew was responsible for spilling hydraulic fluid along the shoreline in Fleming Wednesday.

It's well known that Owasco Lake has enough issues with pollution, last week, hundreds turned out at Emerson Park to get an update on the lake's condition.

This certainly doesn't help matters, but, fortunately, the spill was relatively small and was able to be cleaned up quickly.

HIT: To the Cycling the Erie Canal Tour, that came through Cayuga County with a stop in Port Byron on Wednesday.

What a fun way to spend a week, slowly making your way through a historic area, enjoying some beautiful scenery and getting some great exercise to boot.

About 575 riders are participating, 75 more than were originally expected, which proves the 10th annual Cycling the Erie Canal Tour is stronger than ever.

MISS: To a boil water order for Throop Water District I, issued on Tuesday by the Cayuga County Health Department. A water main break caused the order to be issued.

Safe and clean water is something we take for granted, but it takes something such as this to remind us how quickly it can all change.

Hopefully test results will come back today that allow the order to be lifted.
