Two Auburn residents from both sides of the partisan aisle will battle for a seat on the Cayuga County Legislature come November.
Democrat Cynthia Aikman and Republican incumbent Patrick McIntosh filed petitions with the county Board of Elections to run for the Legislature representing District 15, which encompasses a portion of central Auburn, mostly on the west side.
Both candidates previously voiced their intentions to run with the petitions making it official. The filing deadline was 5 p.m. Thursday.
McIntosh, who is also running on the Conservative ticket, was appointed to the Legislature in March to replace the late Steven Netti, who represented the district for more than a decade. He is required to run in November's election to serve one more year to complete the term.
Aikman was a longtime Auburn city hall employee who resigned her post as economic planning development program manager in September rather than accept a change in duties that would remove her economic development responsibilities.
In addition to Aikman, McIntosh nearly faced a primary challenge as Republican Matthew Salemi Jr., of Auburn, also filed a petition. However, the board of elections denied the petition because witness statements were not signed.
Auburn City Court Judge Michael F. McKeon also submitted the necessary paperwork and will campaign for re-election unopposed. McKeon, who is running on both the Democratic and Conservative tickets, is vying to serve a second, 10-year term.
