State officials have put off indefinitely plans to close gaps in the 524-mile long Canalway Trail System, a network of paths for hikers, runners and bikers.
Canal Corporation Director Carmella Mantello says the state is using its resources instead to repair dams and locks along the canal system.
About 260 miles of the trail have been completed so far, leaving unfinished sections in Oneida, Herkimer and Erie counties.
The state announced in 2005 that it would spend $6 million over three years to close the Rotterdam Junction-Amsterdam gap, but Mantello tells the Daily Gazette of Schenectady that project won't be completed this year.
The network consists of the Erie Canal Heritage Trail, the Old Erie Canal State Park Trail, the Mohawk-Hudson Bikeway and the Glens Falls Feeder Canal Trail.
