WAMPSVILLE - An upstate New York man is going to jail for six months for crashing head-on into his girlfriend's sport utility vehicle last fall.
Madison County Judge Dennis McDermott says Charles Pickard had been drinking alcohol and doing cocaine before he got behind the wheel.
McDermott says Pickard knew he was risking injury to himself and others and “the worst possible outcome occurred.”
The 41-year-old Pickard pleaded guilty in March to criminally negligent homicide in the death of 38-year-old Holli Read, his girlfriend of 20 years.
The crash happened just after 1 a.m. on Nov. 4, about a mile from the home the couple shared. Read was out looking for Pickard when the two collided on a blind curve.
