Our View: Celebrate, Hits & Misses

Friday, July 4, 2008 11:29 PM EDT

HIT: To the Auburn Legends baseball team on being selected to play in the Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament in Cooperstown.
The 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds, coached by Rich Valentino, will get a chance to compete against teams from all over the country as part of the summer-long tournament that will include more than 1,500 teams.

The boys will be staying in Cooperstown for a week in August, where they will not only develop better playing skills, but get to meet dozens of other young athletes who share a similar passion for the game.

Valentino credits Jim Musso with successfully lobbying to get the Auburn team chosen to participate.

MISS: To the rainy start of the Fourth of July weekend.

Sure, the region needs its share of summer rain, but with so many people planning outdoor activities, it would have been more enjoyable for most of us to have had a sunny day Thursday.

Opening day of the Cayuga County Fair turned into a soggy affair, and many people stayed away from what is normally a jam-packed July 3 celebration at Emerson Park.

There will be other chances for summer barbecues, but this big day, unfortunately, turned into a washout for many.

HIT: To the members of Girl Scout Junior Troop 444, who were recently recognized by the Cayuga County Legislature for their community service.

The girls were awarded certificates of appreciation for planting flowers around the Veterans War Memorial in Auburn for the past three years.

The value of community service is just one of the lessons Girl Scouts teaches.

This summer, many girls will spend time at Owasco Oasis and Club Owasco, learning things like theater and sailing, and otherwise simply enjoying their time together.
