The Cayuga County Fair could always use more benefactors, sponsors and volunteers to keep it running. This spring, the fairgrounds was also lacking a vital structural component: a place to house the visiting horses.
The horse barn at the fairgrounds burned to the ground in July 2007 but a replacement was erected in the nick of time.
Brandi Feocco, vice president of the board overseeing the fair, said the horse barn is an essential part of a successful fair because so many of the attractions and competitions involve horses.
The opening day 4-H horse show was followed by Friday's horse pull, sponsored by the state Horse Pullers Association.
Today, there will be a morning draft horse show and an
afternoon event that Feocco said will be among the most well-attended of the fair: the North American Classic Sixhorse Hitch, featuring the top six horse hitches from the Northeast.
And there is an open horse show scheduled for Sunday.
“It's an important part of the fair,” Feocco said. “They all utilize the horse ring and barn. It's used all day every day.”
The new barn has 56 stalls, whereas the old one had 52. But the barn is still in need of upgrades. The stalls being used this year were only meant to be used temporarily, and the Cayuga County Agricultural Society is continually trying to raise money for the installation of permanent stalls.
The organization is looking for individuals, organizations and businesses to sponsor stalls, and raffle tickets available at the fair's information building will help raise money for the new barn's maintenance and improvements.
“We are still in need of help,” Feocco said. “Every person's input is important. We try to make it a bigger and better fair every year.”
Last summer, the barn at the fairgrounds burned just hours after a big rock concert had brought a crowd of thousands to the area. Police at the time considered the fire suspicious but no charges were ever filed.
Feocco said the property owner, Dirt Motorsports, had insurance on the barn that covered the replacement costs.
Construction was completed on a tight schedule and the new barn was finally ready to go just days before the opening of the fair.
