I'm sick of these America-hating, bleeding heart liberals like Harry Reed telling us Americans we've all got to live in little one-cell apartments over the train station and make other changes in our lifestyle just so we can be like the Mexicans and so everybody's poverty is shared equally. That communistic thinking that's got us using food products in place of oil, driving up the cost of gas and food, is gonna destroy this country.
When you get McCain in there you'll have four more years of Bush, and that's got to be far worse than President Carter.
I'd like to know when the city's going to retire some of these old department heads that have been around and don't do a very good job. I've fought with these people over the years and they don't do anything.
How many golf tourneys did AMH pay for bigwigs to participate in that were not noticed? This is insane when you realize they are doing everything they can to avoid honoring the pensions the workers have earned while the upper echelon of management plays golf on the back of those who utilize the hospital.
Why are paying another $12,000 to update a study that is only five years old and that we did not do anything with when we paid over $100,000 for it? When will the five clowns on council realize that paying all this money to do studies is not getting anything done?

I know sometimes I beat the dead horse on this one, but I also realize most folks aren't going to have the time, energy or interest to look up and read a whole article on the subject.
If you do have that level of interest, I highly recommend this survey of 51 studies, of 4 different types, across 50+ years which summarizes the negative effects of industrial farming in 3 categories: Socio-economic well-being, Community social fabrc and Environmental outcomes:
Lobao, Linda and Curtis W. Stofferahn. "The community effects of industrialized farming: Social science research and challenges to corporate farming laws." Agriculture and Human Values Volume 25, Number 2 / June, 2008. p. 219-240.
It's a paid subscription article, so I can't give you a link to the article itself, but you can get the abstract at: http://springerlink.com/content/b82hg7kh5653138v/ "

However, the vast majority of Mexicans (and even more Guatemalans) in the Finger Lakes region are not citizens, and a large portion are NOT legal either. They ARE taking jobs -- because they are willing to work for less than minimum wage, or for just minimum wage for work that is hard enough it should pay more.
By undercutting the wages, the employers (corporate agribusiness out here) not only exploit these workers, but they also take jobs away from Americans, like Farmer Guy -- an extremely experienced farm hand with his own small farm, but can't get $10 an hour full time any more because the farm hand jobs have all gone to foreign workers who will work for much less -- and why not? Their housing and health care are provided (on our dime), so they don't have to pay rent or mortgage or upkeep or health care out of their wages like an honest, legal, American citizen would have to.
They are also bleeding money not only out of the area, but out of the country as they live on as little as they can (i.e. don't put much back into the local economy) and send the rest home to family in some other country.
Corporate agribusiness is BAD FOR THE LOCAL ECONOMY. It does NOT bring money in, it bleeds money out, it brings down the average salary by importing so many low-wage workers, it widens the divide between wealthy and poor as middle-class farm families are driven out of business, it taps the tax base to pay to clean up its ecological messes -- it just boggles my mind how local politicians and tourist agencies are always on about supporting agribusiness in the region. WHY? It is ruining our region to put money in the hands of a tiny few already-wealthy business owners at the expense of local economy, local community, and local environment.
Wake up and smell the manure, that's methane in your air, kids.... "

Suze Orman appears alot on Tv working with this type.
These "rich" whine yet they are overly materialistic! Its not that financially they cannot live within their means--its emotionally they can't!
They have a deep need to have more than their neighbor/to brag more.
They may make 1/4 million but odds are half goes to their mortgage. Then when you add in expenses of upkeep on the mansion/cars,add in a couple of society kids, then there isnt enough for food!
On the outside their life is nothing but show, a daily presentation, BUT on the inside its shallow, depressing, and actually poor!

Good video - he brings up some very interesting facts. Not sure about his conclusion that it is not the oil companies themselves manipulating this "crisis" though. The IMF (as well as the CIA) has an incestuous relationship with big business, and is really nothing more than a protector of their interests. He referred to books by John Perkins and Smedley Butler which I highly recommend.
I also cannot be certain his information about the amount of oil in Prudhoe Bay is accurate, but at this point in time it wouldn't surprise me.
It is certainly true that one of the reasons aside from control of the oil in Iraq was because Saddam did plan to trade oil for Euros rather than the dollar, thereby weakening it.
I think he got the name of our Ambassador to Iraq under GHWB wrong - it was April Gillaspie [sp]? Her message to SH that we would not intervene in his (legitimate) quarrel over the slant drilling by Kuwait was a trap and he did get that part right, well, at least partly. It was not to take over previously ceded territory, but was to stop them from slant drilling into Iraq's oil fields and essentially stealing their oil.
There are certainly a number of flaws with his work and I would urge anyone who's interested to do further research, but he does have many worthwhile and accurate things to say. "

Of course, the exact same thing is true of the war.
The Tweedle-Dee/Tweedle-Dum syndrome seems particularly acute this election year....
I guess this is why I keep going back to the fundamentals -- cm is right that it is not the President alone, but all of Congress and the Senate, and even more -- it's the bastardized interpretation of the Constitution which has given the corporations unnatural power and total influence over all aspects of our government and our lives -- this is what MUST be changed. Otherwise, no matter how good a candidate sounds at the start, s/he will end up toe-ing that corporate line before long and we might as well never even have had an election. It's not like we even get an option of a candidate the people would want to elect.
Like I said, it just makes me sick. "

Alternatives are not just to aid our personal wallets --that's low on the list of reasons to pursue them-- but because they are the right thing to do: we WILL run out of fossil fuels and NEED something else to fuel our vehicles, heat our homes, etc. We also need to find alternatives which are not so destructive of the environment, which also cannot last forever if we keep trashing it.
The 536 are all in bed with the corporations who DO NOT HAVE OUR BEST INTERESTS as their goal. They are out for profit, no matter the cost to everyone and everything else --individual lives, the country as a whole, freedom and justice, the environment-- nothing matters to them except ever increasing wealth for themselves, even if it means living in a world befouled by their means of producing unneeded products out of our scarce resources.
The corporations OWN our government. Sadly, just voting the b*stards out of office won't solve the problem because there will be another crop, equally corrupt, to take their place. We need to make fundamental changes -- starting with reversing the INTERPRETATION of the Constitution which has given corporations literally and legally (for now!) more rights than natural human persons as well as the environment.
(Election reform won't hurt either).
You can bet the corporations will fight this one tooth and nail -- all the more important to get We The People behind the move to change this obscene distortion of our Constitution now. "

As a mini-example, when I see the bag of catfood is 3/4 gone, I add catfood to my shopping list and next time I am at the store, I get more -- I don't wait until I run out and the cats are hungry and miserable before I even get in the car to go buy more. And I also don't have to squeeze in an extra, stress-filled, rush trip to the store to get it. That's just stupid.
No different with oil. We WILL run out. We WILL have to find a different source for energy. We WILL have to change over the way our cars are run, our homes are heated, etc. Why do we want to keep putting off that day until it is a crisis? Now is the time to get serious about an alternate source for energy, not when we're in disaster mode.
Where in the world are you getting gas for under $4 a gallon, cm? I haven't seen anything from Auburn to Ithaca under $4.15 for the past 2 weeks or more.
Right you are, naturelover -- I don't doubt for a minute there are all kinds of plans at various stages of readiness hidden away in corporate exec offices all over the country -- plans which if developed might put them out of their current lucrative business, or plans they are saving until we ARE in crisis, so they can reap even bigger profits when they strategically introduce their solution to our woes.
I know, em, I keep laughing at the fear of "reds under the beds" which keeps cropping up around here too. As if.... "
