The Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education will have new leadership next year.
Current board President David Lansford has indicated that he does not intend to seek re-election Monday when the board meets for its annual reorganizational meeting.
“It's really been a good year,” he said. “I've enjoyed it immensely, but I look forward to being at one of the side tables again. I can be more active as a board member in the community as well as on the board itself without having an officer's role, and I really look forward to that.”
He expects to be on board committees working closely on “sensitive and critical issues,” he said. He was also recently elected to be one of three Cayuga County representatives on the Central New York School Boards Association.
“That's one of the reasons why I felt comfortable stepping aside as president,” he said.
Lansford was elected for his first term as president last year. The board has a three-year term limit.
Current Vice President Charlie Cator indicated at the last board meeting on June 24 that he was interested in the top position this year.
Cator was unable to be reached for comment Thursday.
Board member Sam Giangreco, meanwhile, has announced his intention to run for vice president.
“The reason I want to do it, I feel there are some things I can offer in the position,” he said. “I think it's just a chance to get my foot in the door. I'm in touch with the community a lot and I think I can lend a feeling for what the community thinks and what they want for the future.”
Giangreco said he would like to see more community and student participation in the school board. Oftentimes community members are silent in the public comment portion of board meetings, and Giangreco wants to hear their opinions.
The same holds true for students.
“I'd like to see more participation from our kids in some of the board of education things that come forth,” he said. “That's why we're here, for the children, and I'd like to get their input.”
He said he also wants to continue improving academic achievement, noting that it takes time to see results, but “they will be there.”
The election will take place at Monday's meeting.

Sorry Sam, you are not in touch with this community, in fact you are way out of touch with the needs of this community. You did nothing to represent the community when the 66 million dollar budget was presented for public approval. You did and said nothing when Pabis decided the community was confused and needed to be educated, and placed the same budget up for a vote. You said and did nothing about the "TURF" issue, in fact you have said and accomplished just what the majority of this board has accomplished, "nothing"
You have demonstrated to this community that you are a "Yes" man, a man who has not shown any leadership qualifications, a man who has shown he will, as they say, "Go with the flow"
Sorry Sam, Auburn doesnt not need your type of leadership, in fact it is your type of leadership that has Auburn and Cayuga County one of the 10 tenth highest taxed counties in the nation
Sorry Sam,you must be one of the "confused" people JD Pabis was talking about "
