The only thing immature about Teenager is the name.
Formed in 1998 for one month, the group reformed in January 2007 with original members Donny Alger on lead guitar, Teddy Curry on rhythm guitar and Taylor Price on bass. Beth Beer filled in on drums and Theresa Walsh supplied keyboards, accordion and concertina. Together they cover a range of genres that includes alt-country, British invasion, indie, psychedelic and punk rock.
All five members contribute songs to the band, but the original three remain the principle songwriters. This original material makes up the majority of Teenager's live sets with some covers mixed in. Alger's material takes a more sentimental style, but he also writes songs with comedic social commentary.
“Donny's a master songwriter, he pours everything he has into a song,” said Price.
Curry's songs retain a sharpened pop sensibility with slightly more abstract lyrics Price compares to those of David Bowie. Price prefers to think his own compositions are more anthems than songs. Whoever the author of the song is, the band shares a sentiment behind it.
“Rock and music is something that can get people excited and inspire them,” Price said.
Teenager seeks to take that force to the public through online distribution, such as MySpace and iTunes, which Price feels have made record labels somewhat obsolete. But their ambitions remain modest.
“We have no illusions about getting picked up and going on tour,” Price said. “We're not teenagers.”
