I must admit that I have been neglecting my duty as a citizen of the Town of Montezuma by not attending recent town board meetings. However, that will change.
As per your “Citizen Voting Booth” Poll, I am quite amazed that the board no longer wants to record their meetings. Of course we know why! They have made statements at past meetings that were recorded (and duly noted in minutes) that they deny making. It is quite interesting, to say the least, that this small town board has become so controversial, as of late. Why are they so defensive? Why are they so controlling and domineering?
We are a small town and want what is best for our community - both agriculturally, environmentally, and economically. Not what is best for a few people. We need to look to our future and what we can do to maintain or better our community. We can work together if we try to compromise on a few things.
I took the liberty do some research on the Freedom of Information Law of New York State, Open Meetings Law, and Personal Privacy Protection Law. It is interesting to note that there is an organization called the “Committee on Open Government” that is responsible for implementation of these laws in New York state. Here is their website: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/coog/Right_to_know.html.
I recommend that all citizens read this information as you will find it helpful in obtaining information about your community. There is also very specific information on open/closed meetings (executive sessions: a must read!), meeting minutes (obtaining copies of both open/closed meetings), public participation and recording of meetings.
Thank you for your time,
