Schools can't count on Albany for financial help

Monday, June 30, 2008 11:34 AM EDT

This writer predicts that the current drop in the stock market will significantly reduce Auburn's school aid for next year. Wall Street substantially underwrites New York's education funding. The markets are taking a big hit this year, and Albany knows what is about to happen.
Unfortunately, our autocratic state government is reverting to business as usual. The scandalous “three men in a room” process is being revived. Gimmicks such as the 4 percent tax cap are offered to appease uninformed taxpayers, while the deep systemic issues - the root causes of Albany's dysfunctions - continue to be ignored.

I was surprised at the naive reaction of this paper to the sudden rearrangement of the state Senate's leadership. Does the editor not perceive the corruption behind the smiles and the smooth transition? In yet another Albany scandal, the former Senate leader is reportedly threatened by a serious FBI investigation. With scarcely a blink, his party meets in secret, and he reappears, smiling as always, to step aside and usher in another veteran pol. Please note that his replacement is a shrewd, hard-hitting Long Island rep, with a very successful history of driving unfair amounts of school aid to his constituent districts.

The proposed 4 percent cap will do nothing more than limit local revenue. In other words, it will permit Albany to continue to under-fund Auburn and its surrounding rural districts, while setting their citizens against one another in ways that will divide and disrupt communities.

Our community has just experienced the results of this ploy: bitter recriminations, acrimony, and blame directed at one another, instead of toward the truly responsible parties - our elected representatives in Albany. There is a very important election in November. Let us come together in support of our community and its schools.

" With any luck, Albany will start squeezing the pocketbook and a tax cap will be resoundingly passed by voters.
I have a strong concept for the board. Our gifted school leaders can lead the charge to reign in school spending across the county and consolidate all school districts of Cayuga County into one.
Suddenly we will have an education system that is affordable.
There are states that do this, spend considerably less than we do per student and their national rankings are better than New York. "

" Translation: Let me start making excuses now for the School Board's inability to think outside the box and keep from raising your taxes.

It is all Albany's fault.

Oh, and we need turf just like all the "rich" school districts. "

" What a revelation! We cannot depend upon Albany! Yet year after year you and your cohorts put forth budgets laden with pork spending. Just like this year with $200.00 door knobs!
I also find it amusing that you accuse the Albany politicians of meeting in secret, when you in fact are guilty of doing the exact same thing. If not for one single board member, Mr LeoGrande, the illegal topics of discussion would have remained only speculation.
You and the Board members chose to follow the blind leadership of JD Pabis, you have chosen to ignore the general concerns of the public.
You Mr Lansford have set yourself up as an elitist! Wanton spending with no regard to the public's ability to pay. You have chosen the path we are on. You believed the public was confused and we needed to be educated. In truth it was you that needed an education, you need to realize you are representing an entire district, not just a select few. The leader you chose is not capable of leading this district, JD Pabis has had his very first budget rejected, a direct reflection of the public's confidence in his leadership and yes, Mr Lansford, your leadership as well.
As stated in the editorial above yours, the public was screaming for you to hear them, you were conveniently deaf "
