SKANEATELES - The cost of a fireworks display permit in the town has jumped five times.
Members of the town board earlier this month agreed to raise the fee for the public displays to $250, from the previous $50 per permit.
The resolution also gives the town the prime responsibility to rule on permits for displays scheduled from Sunday through Thursday, unless the day is a holiday or July 3.
The code enforcement department will continue to decide on clearly public displays during the weekend.
Although the resolution passed unanimously, Town Councilor Nancy Murray was uncomfortable with the leap to $250.
In past tabled proposals, the recommended permit fee was $100.
Code enforcement office Debbie Williams noted the fee likely will primarily affect commercial exhibits.
In past public hearings on the subject of amending the town's fireworks code, both representatives from event locations and from fireworks companies didn't take issue with the fee hike, saying people will pay it.
“These fireworks displays that people have I'm sure are extremely expensive. They are done by professional people ... and I don't think this is going to deter them at all,” Williams told the board.
“We look at other towns and they don#'t have this request every weekend like we do in the summertime.”
