Summer camp shaping into form

By Mena Hansinger

This past week we had our open house for Camp Y-Owasco with about 30 families showing up to look around camp and talk to the director and counselors. Dave Hamilton will be our camp director this summer and he has lots of great activities planned.
If the weather is any indication of how the summer will be, then Camp Y-Owasco should be a great place to be!

All of the directors went out and did their part by cleaning up the cabins and getting the waterfront cleared of debris, as well as putting in the docks.

Sessions are filling up quickly so be sure to register your child as soon as you can to assure a spot.

Our golf league has just finished up its second week. Even this past Monday when the weather was unbearably hot, we had people play nine holes. Special recognition should go out to Lesley Leary, Dave Kulakowski, John Chomyk and Cindy DeVoe who played as a foursome and walked all of the course.

Dave looked like he had taken a shower when he came into the happy hour later that night because he was so drenched!

Speaking of the happy hour, it went very well with players enjoying the snacks that were provided by the Auburn YMCA through Lakeview Golf and Country Club.

Most people seemed to have large glasses of ice water with them on the tables, I wonder why? We have a big league this year with 40 players and we look forward to many more times on the course with perhaps a little bit of a drop in the temperature.

Steve Komanecky reported that we have a number of summer sports camp for youth that we will be offering this summer. We have added softball to our lineup and will have two Doubledays baseball camps as well as a baseball camp of our own run under the direction of TJ Gamba who is the Auburn varsity baseball coach.

John Alberici, the varsity wrestling coach at Auburn, will be running a wrestling camp. If you want to, you could provide activities for your child throughout most of the summer by registering for these camps.

Our second session of the Use It and Lose It weight loss challenge is coming to a close. The people who have stayed in the program have been very successful in working on their weight loss goals and I see a lot of them in here working hard to get in good shape and get their bodies where they want them to be. We will have the final results next week so we will let everyone know who the winner of this challenge is.

Now that summer is here and there are more recreational activities to report, I am going to stop writing this column until the fall. As always, thanks to everyone for their very kind comments about this column. I will be back in a few months with lots of interesting information regarding the Auburn YMCA.

Have a safe and healthy summer.
