I have three teenagers. My oldest will be starting his sophomore year in college; my middle daughter will be a senior in high school, and my youngest daughter will be a freshman in high school in the fall. I never imagined that I would be worrying about child care issues at this stage of my life.
However, child care is on my mind each and every day. Looking back 19 years, I realize I was lucky. We never had difficulty finding care for our children. We had two grandmas plus my husband's schedule was flexible. Not everyone has a preset child care arrangement.
As the resource and referral coordinator at the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes, I am charged with the task of assisting parents every day with locating registered and licensed child care programs in Cayuga County. The entire staff at the council is available to help parents, child care providers and others in Cayuga and Seneca counties with a variety of child care issues ranging from education to nutrition to health and safety.
The Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes, Inc. is a member agency of the Cayuga and Seneca County United Way and is partially funded by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the New York State Department of Health and the city of Auburn. Fundraising helps pay for additional expenses not covered by these agencies.
The council would like to invite everyone who has ever had the need for child care, is a child care provider or who cares about the well-being of children to our annual fundraiser “FORE” the Children Mini Golf Tournament. The annual event will be family oriented and will serve up tons of fun from 3 to 7 p.m. July 17 - rain date of July 24, at Reese's Dairy Bar and Miniature Golf on Routes 5 & 20 in Aurelius.
The tournament will operate in much the same way as other golf tournaments that you may have attended. We will work with teams of four and will have a shotgun start. Cost is $40 per team - $20 for two people and $10 for an individual. We will try to accommodate individual tee starting times, but due to time constraints, we may have to consider creating additional teams based on individual registration. If you are connected to a business, why not form a team and join us.
Special awards will be presented to the overall best scoring teams, to the best corporate/agency team, the best non-profit adult team, the best youth team (ages 13 and under), the best mixed youth and adult team, the best scoring two-member team and best in individual class.
In addition to the mini golf tournament, other activities will keep participants entertained off the golf course. A dunking booth will provide participants the opportunity to dunk local celebrities. Local celebrities who will be participating are: Auburn Fire Chief Mike Hammon, Joe Sliwka, Coaches Moskov and Pitcher, Susan Muldoon and many more. Folks will be able to bid on gift certificates and great products from local businesses during the silent auction.
A recycle raffle will give participants the chance to pick up some great new and gently used items. Children will have the opportunity to play a variety of fun games. A local DJ will provide lively tunes to keep participants going during the event.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Child Care Council of the Finger Lakes' programs, which assist families, child care providers and child care programs that benefit children in Cayuga and Seneca counties. The tournament provides a way for families to have a good time while giving to a great cause. And there's no age limit. Everyone from toddlers to 90-year-olds are welcome to come.
