Auburn senior Flannery Nangle is The Citizen girls lacrosse player of the year. Nangle will take her lacrosse skills to Notre Dame in the fall.
In a few short months it will pay off with a Notre Dame education.
A standout in soccer and lacrosse, the senior has spent all her spare time training to utilize her stick skills and last fall a trip to South Bend made the decision for her.
“I really wanted to go to an academic school and then I narrowed down my choices,” said the Academic All-American. “I went to Notre Dame and I loved the campus.”
Nangle is also an All-American in lacrosse as well as first team all-league selection.
She scored 238 goals and had 79 assists in her career, with 77 goals and 21 assists this season. This is why Nangle is The Citizen's Player of the Year in girls lacrosse.
“I started because it was an up-and-coming sport when I was young,” Nangle said. “A family friend and my cousins played. It was something for me to try. My mom tried to expose me to all different sports. Luckily she exposed me to lacrosse.”
Nangle played varsity for Auburn since she was a freshman, tearing up opponent's defenses as a midfielder. She has gone to countless camps to get ready to play attack for the Irish.
“During the recruiting process I went to a ton of camps,” she said. “One summer I went to four or five camps and then tournaments after that. It wasn't painful or anything. I just loved it.”
Notre Dame finished 12-7 last season and had a nice run in the Big East Tournament. The Irish earned a berth to the NCAA tournament before being bounced by eventual and defending champion, Northwestern.
Back at home, the Maroons had some accomplishments of their own, advancing to the second round of the Section III, Class A tournament. Nangle said this year was the best of her four because of it.
