Mention the name Don Jones up at Lakeview Golf and Country Club and you may hear a story or two.
Friends and co-workers remember Jones, who passed away late last year, as a good guy with a great sense of humor.
Jones was the course ranger for years at Lakeview, helping out on the groundskeeping and keeping up the pace of play.
Two golf professionals especially remember Jones during their time at Lakeview, formerly known as Auburn Golf and Country Club.
“I'll never forget the time I was pro at Auburn,” Meadowbrook Golf Course owner Trey Walewski said. “I had received complaints that play was slow up at hole three. So I drive up to the hole and the part of the hole that can made into a par five, I see Jonesy sleeping in his cart. I never let him live that down.”
After Jones' passing, current Lakeview pro Keith Thomas and Walewski decided to host a tournament in his honor.
And so, the Don Jones Senior Open was born. The tournament will be held Saturday at Meadowbrook and Sunday at Lakeview.
“He was the main man for us,” Thomas said. “If we needed something, he was the guy to go to. It's just our way of paying him back for the time he helped us out.”
The Senior Open is broken into several age groups - 50 to 55, 56 to 60, 61 to 69 and 70-and-up.
“This way a 61-year-old isn't getting beat by a 53-year-old,” Walewski said.
The tournament will have an overall winner and a winner in each age group.
There will also be a dinner after the second day at Meadowbrook.
Walewski stresses the fact that he would like the Don Jones Senior Open to become an annual event. He would even be open to recognizing a different person with the tournament every year.
“We want to honor those that are deserving of it,” Walewski said.
It is also an option to hold the event not just at Meadowbrook and Lakeview. Both sides would like to get as many parties involved as possible.
“It would be nice to see other places get involved with this,” Walewski said. “It's also nice for them to see other courses. This way you're not just getting a view of one, but your looking at other courses too.”
Sign-ups are still being accepted until Thursday. There are already over 50 golfers signed up for the event.
