HIT: To the annual “Made in New York” exhibit at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn, which kicked off last weekend.
This summer tradition has always brought compelling art in a variety of forms to the Genesee Street art center, and this year is no different. We applaud the museum for pulling this exhibit together each year, as it provides a showcase for the incredible artistic talent base that exists in this state.
Be sure to stop by the museum this summer and check it out.
MISS: To a pair of weekend accidents that took the lives of two people connected to Cayuga County.
Sterling resident Jack Baker was killed Sunday in a crash on Interstate 481 in Clay.
The day before, Marcellus resident Michele Duprey, a highly respected coach and teacher in the Auburn Enlarged City School District, lost her life when she was struck while riding her bicycle in Otisco.
These tragic events touch not only immediate family and friends, but also entire communities.
HIT: To the Auburn Doubledays, for a great start to the season.
It's early in the year, but the defending New York-Penn League champions have had a stellar first week on the field.
And it's not surprising. The Doubledays consistent success through the years is remarkable, given the turnover that comes with a minor league baseball club. A major constant for Auburn, though, has been manager Dennis Holmberg.
Many of Auburn's young players probably don't realize it yet, but before they're done in September, they'll understand how fortunate they were to play for this team.
MISS: To the typical last-minute wheeling and dealing going on in Albany. Rather than engage in meaningful debate and disciplined work throughout the session, the state Legislature and the governor typically wait until the final days of session before trying to hammer out needed legislation.
The result of this approach, of course, is both missed opportunities and laws that down the road prove to be flawed.
