Long detours to travel to and from Seneca County are now over.
The state Department of Transportation said Monday its overnight repair work has concluded on the bridge carrying state Routes 5 and 20 over the Cayuga Lake Outlet.
The work had forced the bridge to be closed during night time hours, forcing travelers to take alternative routes.
The DOT said that while the work is finished, motorists this week may see some shoulder closures as equipment is removed.
“NYSDOT wishes to express its appreciation to the traveling public for its cooperation and patience while this necessary work was carried out,” a press release from the agency stated.
The on-and-off bridge closure had meant an overnight detour of about 13 miles for motorists traveling on Routes 5 and 20 between Cayuga and Seneca counties.
The started on May 15 and the closure was in place most nights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday.
The bridge was damaged about two years ago when a truck hit the steel trussing.
The DOT was in contact with local emergency services providers about the closure. Workers were prepared to clear the bridge in 20 minutes or less in the event that emergency vehicles needed to cross, Ribakove said.
Contractors had until the end of June to finish the work.
