A Herman Avenue Elementary School physical education teacher was killed Saturday when her bicycle was struck by a motorcycle on Otisco Valley Road in Otisco, police confirmed Sunday.
State Police said Michele Duprey, 41, of 2809 State Route 174, Marcellus, suffered fatal injuries when her bike turned off the southbound shoulder onto the roadway and was struck by a southbound motorcycle driven by Timothy Cebeniak, 41, of Marrietta.
Cebeniak was treated and released from Community General Hospital with minor injuries, troopers said.
Duprey was transported to Community General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police said.
Troopers said they are still investigating the accident and that no charges have been filed.
Auburn Enlarged City School District Superintendent J.D. Pabis said the elementary school would bring in crisis teams consisting of counselors, psychologists and social workers to help the more than 350 students and staff cope with Duprey's death.
“She was a great, young person with a desire to be a great teacher,” Pabis said. “She was involved with coaching and teaching ... she had a great zest for life. Anytime you lose a member of your community, it will have an impact. This will touch every student and every staff member at the school.”
The elementary school's staff would have a meeting on Monday before the students arrived, to talk to the teachers before they told the children about the accident, Pabis said.
The school would try to maintain a normal schedule while allowing students and staff as much time as they needed with the crisis team, Pabis said.
In addition to teaching physical education for nearly eight years, Duprey had coached the Auburn High School varsity women's track and field and field hockey teams.
Even though high school students will be taking their regents exams, Pabis said crisis counselors will be available for those students as well.
“Anytime, as the representative of a school district, when you lose a staff member like this, it feels like you lost a member of your family,” Pabis said. “It's very tough when you lose a close staff member.”
A representative from Mull Funeral Home in Waterloo said calling hours would be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 113 Virginia St. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, in St. Mary's Church, 25 Center St., Waterloo.
