AUBURN - More than 580 works of art were submitted by New York state artists for the annual “Made in NY 2008” exhibit at the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center. Of the art submitted, just 74 pieces by 64 artists were selected to be displayed in the exhibit, which kicked off last weekend and runs through Aug. 23.
The museum hosted an opening reception and awards ceremony Sunday afternoon.
“Any type of medium can be eligible for the exhibit,” said Donna Lamb, the museum's executive director. “The common theme is that all of the artists are from New York state.”
Lamb said that although there are no artists from Auburn, there are many from Cayuga County and the surrounding region.
Photography, painting, and sculpture are some of the many mediums displayed.
Artwork such as a tri-wheeled bicycle with an attached wagon adorned with neon lights titled “Viewer” by artist Daniel Buckingham, of Clayville and a large light switch adorned by many cords titled, 'One Morning I Woke With a Bright Idea' by artist Abraham Ferraro, of Schodack Landing, were among the many state-made pieces.
“There are a lot of really fun exhibits,” Lamb said.
New Paltz artist Roger Bisbing announced on his title card that he had spent most of 10 years thinking of how he would put together the tiny chairs and tables for his exhibit titled, “Lecture 2007. ”
The juried exhibit featured jurors John McQueen, a sculptor from Saratoga Springs, and Jen Pepper, a multi-media artist and professor of art at Cazenovia College.
“The exhibit is a nice mix of realism, and conceptual,” Lamb said. “Variety is always one of the strengths.”
