Congratulations to the 76 seniors who will graduate from Red Creek Central School on Friday evening, June 27. The top five graduates are: Jesse Cramer, Rhiannon Throop, David Flickinger, Caitlin Casler and Jena Lunkenheimer. All together, there are 17 seniors who have a cumulative average of 90 percent or higher. Nearly 85 percent of the seniors will go on to college or join the armed forces. Twenty-nine seniors will receive the distinguished Advanced Regents Diploma.
Many children from the towns of Butler and Wolcott in Wayne County and from the towns of Conquest, Sterling and Victory in Cayuga County attend Red Creek Central School located just inside eastern Wayne County.
Red Creek students again won the “Best Small School” award (for the third time) at the Science Olympiad State competition at West Point. Honors went to Spencer Bills, Caitlin Casler, Chelsea Craine, Jesse Cramer, Kevin Dates, Stephanie Fralick, Elizabeth Grant, Stephanie Grant, Lindsey Johnson, Josh Misso, Olivia Pitts, Nick Schwartz, Allison Sheldon, Steven Sholes, Eric Stevens and Matt Treby.
In the regional environthon competition last month at Baltimore Woods in Marcellus, students from Red Creek who placed first for Wayne County were: the “SG Pit Crew” consisting of Spencer Bills, Caitlin Casler, Jesse Cramer, Stephanie Grant and Nick Schwartz. The “Mules,” who placed second, were Chelsea Craine, Olivia Pitts, Steven Sholes, Clarissa Smalling and Derek Stone. Placing fifth were the “Rams,” which included Aaron Dates, Jake Dates, Kevin Dates, Leah Fries and Jordan Long. The first place team went on to state competition and did very well.
Recent Red Creek inductees in the National Technical Honor Society were Brittney Reed and Robert Richards who attend the Wayne Technical and Career Center. The Honor Society promotes service, leadership, honesty, career development and skilled workmanship. A student must maintain a 90 percent average and 95 percent attendance to be inducted.
Three hundred and fifty students participated in the NYS Conservation Competition held recently at Finger Lakes Community College. Red Creek student John Humphrey placed first in log scaling.
Other awards went to: Alex Earle and Christopher Krebbs for placing third in the two-man cross-cut competition, Ryan Mulholland (post grad) for seventh place in bow saw competition, Christopher Krebbs and John Humphrey for second place in differential leveling, John Humphrey for ninth place in the fish and wildlife identification and Kevin Younglove for fifth place in log scaling and eighth place in the peavey log roll.
The soccer team went on to win the State Class C Boys' championship (two times in the past three years) and were honored in Albany last February. Coach Don Hartley, Coach Gregg and Superintendent David Sholes accompanied the boys on the trip where they met with Sen. Michael Nozzolio and Assemblyman Bob Oaks who both read citations of congratulations to the team.
Thank you to the RCCS faculty, support staff, administrators, Superintendent Sholes and the parents for the great honors and accomplishments of our students.
Some events coming up after RCCS graduation are the RCCS Alumni Banquet to be held Saturday, June 28, at Dalino's Restaurant, Red Creek. Please call me at
730-3183 as soon as possible for information if you would like to come.
Also, Edward and Sue Chmieleski will hold a Lavender Festival from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29, at its Ol' Factory Farm on Upton Road in the town of Victory. Many community groups will be participating with booths and entertainment. The “Tea Barn” gift shop will be open with herbal teas, homemade soap and pottery for purchase. There is a small admission charge, and children younger than 12 are free.
On Tuesday, July 1, the CIViC Heritage Historical Society (making up the Towns of Cato, Ira, Victory and Conquest) will hold their meeting with a picnic at 6:30 p.m., on the lawn at the Victory History Center. People who haven't had a chance to tour the center may do so. Please bring a lawn chair, a table setting and a dish to pass. Iced tea and lemonade will be provided. The picnic is open to the public, and everyone is invited.
Town Historian Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Ag Museum in Auburn, so hope to see everyone there to view our town displays. It is also Draft Horse and Hay Day.
One very special “hello” to Marjorie Baldwin Thompson in Las Vegas (formerly from the “greater Victory” area, actually the town of Ira) who turns 90 years young July 15. Happy, Happy Birthday!
